Excerpt from Syphilis of the Innocent: A Study of the Social Effects of Syphilis on the Family and the Community, With 152 Illustrative Cases, Made Under a Grant From the United States Interdepartmental Social Hygiene Board For some years we have been interested in the family of the syphilitic. This interest has extended beyond the purely medical problems to the social effects of syphilis. There has come the realization that in many instances syphilis is a disease which invades the family. The family being but a unit of the community, it follows that the communal structure is also involved. The United States Interdepartmental Social Hygiene Board has granted us funds for the study and investigation of problems related to the familial and social aspects of syphilis. The results of several studies have been published in current journals, but as our investigations increased it seemed to be more satisfactory to publish them as a unit rather than as separate entities. We have attempted to present the subject of syphilis in its social aspects, portraying the practical problems as they actually arise in the handling of syphilitic cases, and illustrating the text with cases from the clinic. It is our hope that we have been able to show that the problems of syphilis are many more than those of purely medical interest. Acknowledgment must be made first of all to the United States Interdepartmental Social Hygiene Board whose grant of funds made it possible to carry on many of the investigations and to collect and publish the material here presented. Our revered former chief, Dr. E. E. Southard, suggested the idea of presenting our work in the form of a monograph. While his untimely death prevented him from giving the oversight and advice that he otherwise would have done, we hope that we have profited to some extent by what he did give us. While the major portion of the material comes from our clinic at the Boston Psychopathic Hospital, we have fortunately been able to collect material from several other sources. Excerpt from Syphilis In preparing this volume for the profession it has been the aim of the author to present the subject of syphilis in as practical a manner as possible. For this reason a considerable portion of the work is devoted to diagnosis and treatment. The chapter on laboratory diagnosis is made especially full, as today the desirability, in fact the necessity, of laboratory aid is more evident for the successful treatment of syphilis than for any other disease. Matters of theoretical and historical interest, of course, are discussed, but usually only when they have some bearing upon the practical handling of the subject. The author has drawn freely from the literature of syphilis at his command for his material and has added his personal views and experiences. In all instances, when possible, he has given credit to those authors whose work he has cited. During the three years which have elapsed since the appearance of the first edition the author has been particularly impressed with the importance of visceral syphilis. A rethinking of the disease with reference to its ambiguous status, and the ways of seeing that it generated, helps reconsider the network of socio-cultural and political interrelations which were negotiated through syphilis, thereby also raising larger questions about its function in the construction of individual, national and imperial identities. Excerpt from Syphilis and Public Health The importance of this subject cannot be too highly emphasized. Syphilis is one of the most prevalent of all infectious diseases, causes an incalculable amount of suffering and economic loss, and because it has so far eluded sanitary control is a constant menace not only to the licentious but to the clean-living public as well. Because of the secrecy which has always shrouded the disease we do not know and perhaps never shall know the exact incidence of syphilis, but sufficient is known with regard to its prevalence to justify the above statement. For several years past syphilis has been made a reportable disease by the city of New York. During the fourteen weeks from July 4 to October 3, 1914, infectious and contagious dis eases were reported. Of these, syphilis stood first on the list, with 6432 cases, or 28 per cent.; tuberculosis second, with 5525 cases, or 21 per cent. Diphtheria third, with 3370 cases, or 13 per cent.; measles fourth, with 2750 cases, or 11 per cent.; scarlet fever fifth, with 1064 cases, or 4 per cent. From this and many other statistics which will be quoted later it would appear that with the exception of gonorrhea syphilis is the most prevalent of all serious infectious diseases. Authority, Gender, and Midwifery in Early Modern Italy: Contested Deliveries explores attempts by church, state, and medical authorities to regulate and professionalize the practice of midwifery in Italy from the late sixteenth to the late eighteenth century. Medical writers in this period devoted countless pages to investigating the secrets of women’s sexuality and the processes of generation. By the eighteenth century, male practitioners in Britain and France were even successfully advancing careers as male midwives. Yet, female midwives continued to manage the vast majority of all early modern births. An examination of developments in Italy, where male practitioners never made successful inroads into childbirth, brings into focus the complex social, religious, and political contexts that shaped the management of reproduction in early modern Europe. Authority, Gender, and Midwifery in Early Modern Italy argues that new institutional spaces to care for pregnant women and educate midwives in Italy during the eighteenth century were not strictly medical developments but rather socio-political responses both to long standing concerns about honor, shame, and illegitimacy, and contemporary unease about population growth and productivity. In so doing, this book complicates our understanding of such sites, situating them within a longer genealogy of institutional spaces in Italy aimed at regulating sexual morality and protecting female honor. It will be of interest to scholars of the history of medicine, religious history, social history, and Early Modern Italy.
