Book Description
During the last decade, a rapid growth of knowledge in the field of re-entry and planetary entry has resulted in many significant advances useful to the student, engineer and scientist. The purpose of offering this course is to make available to them these recent significant advances in physics and technology. Accordingly, this course is organized into five parts: Part 1, Entry Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Physics and Radiation; Part 2, Entry Abla tion and Heat Transfer; Part 3, Entry Experimentation; Part 4, Entry Concepts and Technology; and Part 5, Advanced Entry Programs. It is written in such a way so that it may easily be adopted by other universities as a textbook for a two semesters senior or graduate course on the sub ject. In addition to the undersigned who served as the course instructor and wrote Chapters, 1, 2, 3 and 4, guest lecturers included: Prof. FRANKLIN K. MOORE who wrote Chapter 5 "Entry Radiative Transfer," Prof. SHIH-I PAI who wrote Chapter 6 "Entry Radiation-Magnetogasdy namics," Dr. CARL GAZLEY, J r. who wrote Chapter 7 "Entry Deaccelera [ion and Mass Change of an Ablating Body," Dr. SINCLAIRE M. Thermoelastic Damping and Its Effect on Flutter of Stressed Panels Situated in a Supersonic Airflow
Author: R. C. Shieh
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerodynamics, Supersonic
Languages : en
Pages : 44
Book Description
The effects of material damping on flutter of stressed rectangular panels are studied within the context of linear thermoelasticity theory. The closed-form expression for the thermoelastic (material) damping coefficient is obtained as a function of frequency, panel temperature and dimensions, and material properties. The solution of the stability boundary-value problem is obtained by use of a generalized Galerkin method in the cross-stream direction which reduces the governing partial differential equations to a system of ordinary differential equations in the streamwise direction. These equations are then solved exactly. Numerical results are given for the thermoelastic damping coefficients and for the flutter speeds of partially and fully clamped panels subjected to midplane stress.

Progress in Aeronautical Sciences
Author: D. Küchemann
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 148314934X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 387
Book Description
Progress in Aeronautical Sciences, Volume 6 reviews advances in aeronautical sciences and considers a wide range of problems related to aerodynamics, including some classical problems of fluid motion and those affecting hypersonic aircraft. Topics covered range from equations of gas flow at low density; nonequilibrium expansion flows of dissociated oxygen and ionized argon around a corner; and the role of spatially growing waves in the theory of hydrodynamic stability. This volume is comprised of five chapters and begins with a discussion on flows of gases where the density of the gas is too low for equations of continuum gas dynamics to be applicable. The kinetic theory of gases is used to derive the equations governing such flows. The second chapter deals with the nature of shock waves in flows of electrically conducting gases subjected to magnetic fields. The third chapter is concerned with the theory of two-dimensional flows of dissociated oxygen or ionized argon expanding around a corner. The fourth chapter goes back to the classical problem of hydrodynamic stability and the possible mechanics underlying the transition from the laminar to a turbulent state of the flow. The last chapter describes a future type of aircraft that can fly at hypersonic speeds. This book will be a useful resource for students and practitioners in the field of aeronautics.
