On 25 September 2015, 193 countries of the UN General Assembly embraced the 2030 Development Agenda titled "Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development". Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were built on the success as well as on the shortcomings of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Over the years there has been an argument of MDGs being unfair as a parameter for all the countries alike. Few of the countries with required resources were able to strive towards the achievement of MDGs whereas those with substantially fewer resources were not able to catch up. As Ban-Ki-Moon rightly said, "We don't have plan B because there is no planet B!". This thought has paved the way for the development of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are an amalgamation of various goals covering every aspect of human development globally. The MDGs concentrated on curbing extreme poverty, hunger, and preventable disease, and were the most significant global development goals in the history of the United Nations. The SDGs will resume the fight against extreme poverty but will add the challenges of ensuring more fair development and environmental sustainability, specifically the key goal of curbing the dangers of human-induced climate change.This paper deals with the status of SDGs in India with the help of recent data. The analysis is based on the data collected from various sources for every Indian state. Every SDG has been attributed a variable which signifies the status of the specific goal. Preliminary analysis shows that India has grown substantially in last 15 years for few of the basic parameters and are on the track of achieving the goals, but when we look deeply into the state-wise data a wide disparity is clearly visible. Some parameters which are acceptable overall is driven by few of the selected states whereas other states are substantially lagging. The paper attempts to rank each of the states based on the SDG Index. On the basis of the analysis, we find that the policy which may look sufficient on a national basis might not be appropriate on the state level. The state-wise index also helps to understand the key areas where the policymakers should pay attention to. The index shows the clear disparity between India states and a lot must be done to achieve uniform success across states.

This book covers themes related to the geosphere, biosphere, sociosphere and ecosphere dealing with changing geographical, environmental and socio-economic realities to plan a sustainable future for the northeast region (NER) of India. The NER consists of eight states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Sikkim—and they carry political, economic and social importance. The book integrates the past, present and future of geospheric attributes incorporating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to meet the demands for improving human wellbeing under diverse and challenging socio-economic, political and environmental conditions. The key SDGs, as in food and agriculture, health, education, water, energy and other overarching goals of the region, have yet to incorporate providing sustainable jobs and promoting equality and inclusive development, although there have been a few studies in that regard. The challenges to achieve SDGs in the NER are formidable compared to the rest of India. The NER has put a great deal of effort into achieving the SDGs, mainly in poverty (SDG-1), good health (SDG-3), education (SDG-4), gender (SDG-5), decent work (SDG-8) and reduced inequalities (SDG-10), similar to the rest of the country. However, the standard development indicators such as road length, access to health care, power consumption and other measures are far below the national average. A multi-pronged strategy has played a pivotal role in the region, but development strategy to attain the SDGs 2030 must be more inclusive in empowering people with maximising self-governance, considering the resources, needs and aspirations of the people. This book evaluates the performance of the SDGs and fills in the gaps. It includes case studies focusing on different SDGs using advanced cartographic, statistical and GIS techniques and methods. The sustainable development goals (SDGs) present a real opportunity to direct India towards a path of equality and equity. This article posits that India's plans to achieve the millennium development goals by the end of their term in 2015 faltered because reforms designed to alleviate poverty and achieve equitable growth did not adequately address weaknesses in institutions of accountability, which undermined the reform agenda. These institutions, which include Parliament and the judiciary, exist in part to ensure that actions taken by public officials are subject to oversight so that government initiatives meet their stated objectives. As India shifts its attention to Agenda 2030, its renewed commitment to institutional reforms represents an occasion for the state to address the inequalities in income and the resulting human development concerns. For the government to achieve the SDGs, this article suggests that India must integrate what we refer to as a baseline conception of distributive justice within its plans, which can account for structural barriers to its development arising from ineffective institutions of accountability and provide the poor with a route towards individual empowerment.
