Pages : 0
Book Description
"Malathion is a registered insecticide and acaricide used on a wide variety of sites including agricultural and non-agricultural sites. In 2018 (the most recent year for which data are available), over 25 000 kg of malathion was sold in Canada. Malathion may be released into surface water or soil as runoff from the application site. Malathion is not usually found in drinking water sources in Canada. Low levels of malathion have been found in several Canadian provinces. The maximum reported concentrations are well below the MAC. Canadian Guidance Framework for the Management of Phosphorus in Freshwater Systems
Author: Canada. National Guidelines and Standards Office
Publisher: Environment Canada
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 136
Book Description
This document presents a guidance framework for the management of phosphorus in freshwater systems. The introduction reviews the development & validation of this framework. Chapter 2 presents a review of the scientific literature on phosphorus in the aquatic environment, including properties, sources, fate, sediment interactions, parameters affecting phosphorus availability, trophic status, & effects on organisms. Chapter 3 examines a number of approaches used by other jurisdictions for setting phosphorus guidelines. Chapter 4 outlines the proposed framework-based approach for phosphorus management in which water bodies are marked for further assessment by comparing their trophic status to predefined ranges of phosphorus concentration. Chapter 5 summarizes some of the recommended assessment options currently use in Canada & other jurisdictions. Chapter 6 reviews management options that can be considered once the phosphorus concentrations have been assessed & compared to original goals for the water body. The final two chapters present case studies of implementation of this framework at Lake Simcoe in Ontario and at Kodiak Lake, Northwest Territories.

The River Returns
Author: Christopher Armstrong
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773576797
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 488
Book Description
Alberta's iconic river has been dammed and plumbed, made to spin hydro-electric turbines, and used to cleanse Calgary. Artificial lakes in the mountains rearrange its flow; downstream weirs and ditches divert it to irrigate the parched prairie. Far from being wild, the Bow is now very much a human product: its fish are as manufactured as its altered flow, changed water quality, and newly stabilized and forested banks. The River Returns brings the story of the Bow River's transformation full circle through an exploration of the recent revolution in environmental thinking and regulation that has led to new limits on what might be done with and to the river.

Author: Darrell W. Pepper
Publisher: WIT Press
ISBN: 1845645561
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 577
Book Description
This book contains the papers presented at a conference co-organized by the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and the Wessex Institute of Technology to facilitate trans-disciplinary communication on issues related to the nature of water, and its use and exploitation by society. With adequate water supply becoming a critical issue in more and more area, \there is a great and urgent need to bridge the gap between the broad spectrum of social sciences and humanistic disciplines and the specialists in physical and natural sciences, biology, environmental sciences, and health. Many issues are also trans-national in nature and relate to rights of states and hence it is essential to discuss these at international level to arrive at equitable and binding solutions that will ensure the rights of society to quality water supplies. The book discusses The nature of water; Water as a human right; Water as the source of life; Water in a changing climate; Future water demands and adaptation strategies; Water resources contamination; Surface and sub-surface water resources; Irrigation and desertification; Water, sanitation and health; Transnational water rights; Legislation and controls; Water through the ages; Lessons to be learnt; and Water and disaster management.
