Book Description
"This report deals with the subsurface stratigraphy of the Mackenzie River region between 64 degrees north latitude and the Arctic coast, and between the Canadian Shield and the west border of Yukon Territory. The study is based on the examination of well samples, cores, and mechanical logs of all important exploratory wells drilled prior to March, 1961, and on published information to that date. References are made to surface geology and paleontology, and to published stratigraphic concepts in order to substantiate the suggested nomenclature and stratigraphy. Several informal lithologic units and one new formation are introduced. The economic potential of each formation is examined." --

Book Description
Over the last forty years much has been published on the sedimentary geology of Great Bear River area. The discoveries of oil in the Devonian reef at Norman Wells and in cambrian sands at Tedji Lake have attested to the area's hydrocarbon potential. Surface mapping and local studies have revealed rock sequences and crustal structures of great potential value to our understanding of global geology. The aim of this report is to assist evaluation of the economic potential and to improve the interpretation of the geological history. Based o n subsurface data, the stratigraphy and structure of the area and analyzed in detail and are illustrated on a series of maps and cross-sections, and nomenclature is reviewed and integrated regionally with that of adjacent areas.

Book Description
This book contains six chapters dealing with the investigation of seismic and sequence stratigraphy and integrated stratigraphy, including the stratigraphic unconformities, in different geological settings and using several techniques and methods, including the seismostratigraphic and the sequence stratigraphic analysis, the field geological survey, the well log stratigraphic interpretation, and the lithologic and paleobotanical data. Book chapters are separated into two main sections: (i) seismic and sequence stratigraphy and (ii) integrated stratigraphy. There are three chapters in the first section, including the application of sequence and seismic stratigraphy to the fine-grained shales, to the fluvial facies and depositional environments, and to the Late Miocene geological structures offshore of Taiwan. In the second section, there are three chapters dealing with the integrated stratigraphic investigation of Jurassic deposits of the southern Siberian platform, with the stratigraphic unconformities, reviewing the related geological concepts and studying examples from Middle-Upper Paleozoic successions; and, finally, with the integrated stratigraphy of the Cenozoic deposits of the Andean foreland basin (northwestern Argentina).

Book Description
Gently folded, unmetamorphosed Upper Proterozoic (Hadrynian or Neohelikian) sedimentary rocks, with a total exposed thickness of about 6,000 feet, underlie most of the map-area; gabbro sills and dykes locally intrude the strata. Paleozoic, marine sedimentary rocks, ranging in age from Cambrian to Middle Devonian, and having an exposed thickness of about 1,700 feet, uncomformably overlie the Proterozoic rocks. Paleozoic rocks are separated by a regional hiatus from the overlying Cretaceous sequence that is about 700 feet thick and composed of quartz sandstones, siltstones, shale and coal. Thick, topographically prominent, Pleistocene glacial deposits obscure bedrock throughout wide regions.

Book Description
Our understanding of the ecology of running waters has come a long way during the past few years. From being a largely descriptive subject, with a few under tones concerned with such things as fisheries, pollution or control of blackflies, it has evolved into a discipline with hypotheses, such as the River Continuum Concept (Vannote et a/. 1980), and even a book suggesting that it offers opportunity for the testing of ecological theory (Barnes & Minshall 1983). However, perusal of the literature reveals that, although some of the very early studies were concerned with large rivers (references in Hynes 1970), the great mass of the work that has been done on running water has been on streams and small rivers, and information on larger rivers is either on such limited topics as fisheries or plankton, scattered among the journals, or not available to the general limnologist. The only exceptions are a few books in this series of publications, such as those on the Nile (Rz6ska 1976), the Volga (Morduckai Boltovskoi 1979) and the Amazon {Sioli 1984), and the recent compendium by Whitton (1984) on European rivers, among which there are a few that rate as large.
