Book Description
Distributed Feedback (DFB) Lasers are commonly used in communication networks as the source for optical signals. DFB lasers have many advantages, including stable frequencies, affordability, and the ability to generate short-duration pulses that are necessary for high-speed communications. In the experiments we conducted, we examined a DFB's response to changes in a DC input current and also a combination of a DC input current and an AC input current. The AC input frequency was modified, producing variable optical outputs from the DFB laser diode. We demonstrated gain switching in the laboratory from frequencies from 100 MHz to 2.0 GHz. While not all of the frequencies in that band produced optical pulses suitable for use in a communications network, several frequencies of the input AC current did produce short-duration pulses with a low duty cycle. We examined the results of the gain-switching experiment and provided results for several baseline frequencies and several frequencies that provided a short pulse duration. Because our budget was limited for these experiments, we provided some possible improvements in follow on activities. These include the use of dispersion compensating fiber, an additional laser diode, and a faster AC signal generator.

Book Description
Applications of semiconductor lasers with optical feedback systems are driving rapid developments in theoretical and experimental research. The very broad wavelength-gain-bandwidth of semiconductor lasers combined with frequency-filtered, strong optical feedback create the tunable, single frequency laser systems utilised in telecommunications, environmental sensing, measurement and control. Those with weak to moderate optical feedback lead to the chaotic semiconductor lasers of private communication. This resource illustrates the diversity of dynamic laser states and the technological applications thereof, presenting a timely synthesis of current findings, and providing the roadmap for exploiting their future potential. * Provides theory-based explanations underpinned by a vast range of experimental studies on optical feedback, including conventional, phase conjugate and frequency- filtered feedback in standard, commercial and single-stripe semiconductor lasers * Includes the classic Lang-Kobayashi equation model, through to more recent theory, with new developments in techniques for solving delay differential equations and bifurcation analysis * Explores developments in self-mixing interferometry to produce sub-nanometre sensitivity in path-length measurements * Reviews tunable single frequency semiconductor lasers and systems and their diverse range of applications in sensing and optical communications * Emphasises the importance of synchronised chaotic semiconductor lasers using optical feedback and private communications systems Unlocking Dynamical Diversity illustrates all theory using real world examples gleaned from international cutting-edge research. Such an approach appeals to industry professionals working in semiconductor lasers, laser physics and laser applications and is essential reading for researchers and postgraduates in these fields.

Book Description
The accumulative demand for high-bandwidth communications has been liable for the hasty development of Optical Communication Systems (OCS). These systems employ fiber optics to convey electromagnetic waves, and need to take into account the undesired effects of dispersion and reduction on the bandwidth. In recent year, distributed feedback laser was one of the substantial topics that have been study for many years. It was introduced and developed by Kogelnik and Shank. Since that model release, people are now recognizing distributed feedback laser are imperative to human requisite. Distributed feedback lasers are useful item in society or the world because it provides the phase difference between the gain and the index grating based on using power series method to resolve the couple-wave equation that reveals the calculation of the threshold gain margin which located in complex-couple distributed feedback laser. This handbook brings together cutting-edge research and reviews on distributed feedback laser diodes; illustrates the method of calculation the threshold gain margin that play important role in the optic world. This volume is intended to the study of semiconductor lasers with distributed feedback (DFB), namely their usage as the light source in high bit rate optical communication systems (OCS). This is particularly important in situations where direct modulation (DM) of the emitter is used. In addition, it also presents emphasis how distributed feedback laser (DFB) play important role in optic world and the advantage or disadvantage of using DFB. The fabrication of high-efficiency distributed feedback laser diodes is described.

Book Description
Results of the experimental study of peak pulse shifting due to gain multiplication during repetitive excitation of distributed feedback dye lasers are presented. The DFDL was excited by 10 to 20 pulse of second harmonic of a by Imacon 675-streak camera with no relative delay. It was signals of DFDL and Nd:YAG output envelope of pulses was delayed from peak of the excitation Nd:YAG envelope of pulses by more than one inter-pulse period (2L/C) of excitation laser. Various types of cases such as different excitation energies and inter-pulse time periods were studied and a DFDL intensity based model was developed.

Book Description
Laser diodes represent a key element in the emerging field of opto electronics which includes, for example, optical communication, optical sensors or optical disc systems. For all these applications, information is either transmitted, stored or read out. The performance of these systems depends to a great deal on the performance of the laser diode with regard to its modulation and noise characteristics. Since the modulation and noise characteristics of laser diodes are of vital importance for optoelectronic systems, the need for a book arises that concentrates on this subject. This book thus closes the gap between books on the device physics of semiconductor lasers and books on system design. Complementary to the specific topics concerning modulation and noise, the first part of this book reviews the basic laser characteristics, so that even a reader without detailed knowledge of laser diodes may follow the text. In order to understand the book, the reader should have a basic knowledge of electronics, semiconductor physics and optical communica tions. The work is primarily written for the engineer or scientist working in the field of optoelectronics; however, since the book is self-contained and since it contains a lot of numerical examples, it may serve as a textbook for graduate students. In the field of laser diode modulation and noise a vast amount has been published during recent years. Even though the book contains more than 600 references, only a small part of the existing literature is included.
