In De cura pro mortuis gerenda Augustine interweaves an assessment of burial near the memorial of a martyr with a series of dream narratives. The seeming lack of coherence between argument and narrative in this treatise has puzzled many scholars. Combining an analysis of the overall structure of the argument and a detailed philological commentary, this study shows that Augustine’s text forms a well-composed unity. The study is based on discourse-linguistic and narratological concepts as well as an analysis of the global structure of the narratives. The Codex Vercellensis is one of the great treasures of the Vercelli library, containing the four Gospels. Written during the fourth century, it is the oldest remaining Latin manuscript of the Greek New Testament and one of the most important witnesses to the early understanding of the Gospels. In this edition, Weissenrieder and Visinoni provide the Latin text of the work parallel to spectral images, indicating abbreviations, lineation, foliation and staurograms as well as a (reconstructed) critical edition with references to the most important texts of the Old Latin tradition as well as Greek and Syriac manuscripts and a commentary to this unique Latin translation. The analyses involved will be: (1) digital methods, (2) philological and theological, (3) translation theories in antiquity as well as (4) genealogical. The authors call into question assumptions about the text preserved in the manuscript, arguing that it represents an early stage of the Latin Gospels. The manuscript will be examined in light of its wide-ranging cultural and historical context. As such, the project aligns itself methodologically with the field of manuscript studies and attempts to integrate the specialized expertise of various disciplines in the study of a single object.

The internal ordering of Latin noun phrases is very flexible in comparison with modern European languages. Whereas there are a number of studies devoted to the variable placement of modifiers, The Noun Phrase in Classical Latin Prose proposes an entirely new approach: a discussion of the semantic and syntactic properties of both nouns and modifiers. Using recent insights in general linguistics, it argues that not only pragmatic factors but also semantic factors (whether we are dealing with an inherent property, the author’s assessment, or a further specification of a referent) are responsible for the internal ordering of Latin noun phrases. Additionally, this book discusses prepositional phrases functioning as modifiers, and appositions, which have received little attention in the literature.

The book investigates multiple preverbs (PVs) in some ancient IE languages (Vedic, Homeric Greek, Old Church Slavic, and Old Irish). After an introduction, it opens with the theoretical framework and a typologically-oriented overview of PVs. It then gives quantitative data about multiple PV composites and carries out philological, formal, semantic, and syntactic analyses on them. The comparison among these languages suggests that a process of accumulation lies behind multiple PV composites. Also, PV ordering is explained by different factors: semantic solidarity between PVs and verbs PVs tendency to be specified by event participants, PVs etymologies, influence from other languages. The book also contributes to casting light on the reasons for PVs grammaticalization and lexicalization. These are two distinct reanalyses triggered by the same factor, i.e. the mentioned semantic solidarity, which makes PVs be felt as redundant. They are thus reassigned salient pieces of information as actional markers (grammaticalization) or reinterpreted as part of the verb (lexicalization).
