Book Description
Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Industry Improve your product development skills to bring new ideas to biomedicine The development of innovative healthcare products, such as biodegradable implants, biopharmaceuticals, or companion diagnostics, requires a multi-disciplinary approach that incorporates scientific evidence with novel and innovative ideas to create new and improved products and treatments. Indeed, product development and the integration of science with commercial aspects have become key challenges for scientists working in the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medtech industries. Using a multi-pronged approach to development, Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Industry combines ideas and methodologies from four of the central areas of focus in the biomedical arena: pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, biomaterials, and medical devices. In doing so, the book covers the entire product lifecycle, from translating a scientific idea into a prototype to product development, launch, and management. Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Industry readers will also find: Several case studies from the most important product categories (pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical devices, combination products) Chapters dealing with toxicology and safety risks in development, as well as regulatory approval Key business aspects including how to secure funding, managing intellectual property, and price regulation in the market An ideal resource for teachers and students that conveys the information in an easily-digestible format Ideal for advanced students and young professionals pursuing a career in the biomedical and healthcare industries, Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Industry is an essential reference for those in pharmaceutical industry, biotechnologists, medicinal chemists, bio-engineers, pharma engineers, and management consultants.

Book Description
In spite of a long history of intense investigation the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies remain a poorly understood family of neurodegenerative diseases. This group of diseases has been described in a wide variety of animal species and includes kuru, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and Gerstmann-Straussler syndrome in humans, and scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, and related syndromes in ruminants and rodents. In all cases spongiform degeneration and astrocytosis are seen in specimens of brain and a filterable transmissible agent is present in the brain and some other tissues of affected individuals. However, the precise nature of this agent remains unknown. Agent infectivity, which can so far only be assayed by serial transmission to new individuals, be remarkably resistant to inactivation has been shown to by heat, chemicals, and irradiation. These properties create significant biohazard possibilities during exposure to infected tissues. Transmission between humans was originally reco gnized in the unique epidemiology of kuru in New Guinea tribesmen, and concern about transmission from animals to humans has re-emerged as a result of the current epidemic of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in dairy cattle in Great Britain. Although interspecies transmission has often been achieved experimentally, its efficiency is highly variable. There fore, the possibility of spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy from cattle to humans or various animal populations cannot be accurately predicted at this time. This volume presents a comprehensive update of know ledge concerning the transmissible spongiform encephalo pathies.

Book Description
Load-Bearing Fibre Composites provides a unified view of the entire field of fiber and platelet composites. This book explores the complex interactions between fibers and matrix. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the fundamental ideas in the field of fiber reinforced composites. This text then provides data on their load-bearing capabilities. Other chapters consider a rough estimate of how strong a material could be and describe the two main sources of weakness in real materials. This book discusses as well the slender forms of material and describes the simple slip theory of reinforcement that gives the modulus and strength for aligned short-fiber composites. The final chapter deals with the versatile use of fiber reinforced materials, which can be designed for a specific application by suitable choice of components and volume fraction. This book is a valuable resource for materials scientists, metallurgists, designers, engineers, and research workers.

Book Description
This book discusses and chronicles various types of manufacturing processes, including casting and molding, machining, joining, shearing, and forming. It refers to repetitive, discrete job shop process manufacturing (continuous) and process manufacturing (batch). It also offers detailed examples from the nuclear, electronic, plastics, adhesives, inks, packaging, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Advanced Manufacturing Operations Technologies: Principles, Applications, and Design Correlations in Chemical Engineering Fields of Practice fills the gap in the connection between production and regulated applications in several industries. It highlights established concepts and provides a new, fresh outlook by concentrating on and creating linkages in the implementation of practices in manufacturing and safe, clean energy systems. Case studies for the overall design, installations, and construction of manufacturing operations in various industries as well as the standard operating procedures are offered. The book also discusses the correlation between design strategies including step-by-step processes to ensure the reliability, safety, and efficacy of products. The fundamentals of controlled techniques, quality by design, risk assessment, and management are covered in support of operations applications and continuous improvement. This comprehensive book is helpful to all professionals, students, and academicians in many scientific disciplines that utilize fundamental principles of chemical engineering. It is engineering-driven and will be of use to those in industrial and manufacturing, chemical, biochemical, mechanical engineering, and automated control systems fields.
