Excerpt from Stories of Exploration and Discovery This little book is the outcome of several years' experience in the teaching of an original course on the History of Discovery. The course has been given to middle forms, and spread over two years' work, with a fortnightly lesson. This has been supplementary to the usual work in History and Geography, and the study of both those subjects has been found to benefit considerably. An aspect of human endeavour and progress that is often only lightly touched upon has received more adequate and connected treatment, with corresponding gain in interest. The course has afforded opportunities for the revision of World History and Geography, from a fresh point of view, but the chief value has been found to lie in the stimulus to wider reading on the part of the pupils. The short list of books appended to this volume illustrates the scope of such reading. It has been difficult to choose, from the great mass of material available, just those stories which are at once representative and important in the general history of exploration, and interesting in themselves. The aim has been to preserve something of a historical outline, though necessarily incomplete, which may prevent the book from becoming merely a series of disconnected biographies, and may serve to illustrate the continuity of human efforts to solve the great problems of exploration. With a deep sense of this truth, the latest authorities have been made tributary to this volume, and the author has spared no pains to have it correct in every statement of facts, and in the difficult matter of dates. The work is a study of authorities, under the lead of such writers as those who have contributed to Mr. Winsor's invaluable Narrative and Critical History of America, and of those whose works are mentioned in the very extensive notes appended to its different chapters. For other author ities the Library of Harvard College has furnished ample resources, and they have been extensively used. Among the works especially valuable for the period covered by this volume are the narratives of the early navigators, found in the publications of the Hakluyt Society and else where. The young are not qualified to investigate these books, but they contain much that is of great interest to them. The more difficult words are explained at the close of the volume. The author limits the list in the hope that the young reader may not be discouraged by it, and he trusts that teachers will cultivate in them the habit of consulting dictionaries and other works of reference.
