Book Description
"The Ancient Murrelet (Synthliboramphus antiquus) is a small (about 25 cm long) seabird in the Alcidae family. It was assessed in April 1993 as Special Concern by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). It was re-examined in 2004 and confirmed as Special Concern due to introduced mammalian predation on the breeding islands. The species was listed on Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA) in 2006"--Executive summary, p. iii.

COSEWIC Status Appraisal Summary on the Ancient Murrelet Synthliboramphus antiquus in Canada SPECIAL CONCERN 2014 COSEWIC status appraisal summaries are working documents used in assigning the status of wildlife species suspected of being at risk in Canada. [...] In 2011, sample burrows on the southern and central sections of Helegesen Island indicated an occupancy rate of 0.11 compared with 0.63 in 1986, a decline in the population estimate of ~90% (Gaston et al. [...] If the overall population estimate in 1986 reflected the population on Lihou at that time, then a decline in the breeding population on Lihou Island of ~50% occurred between 1986 and 2011. [...] A major blow-down of forest on several of the Laskeek Bay colony islands in the winter of 2010-11 reduced the amount of nesting habitat available to Ancient Murrelets (Gaston et al. [...] In the decade following the eradication of Norway Rats (Rattus norvegicus) on Langara Island in the mid-1990s, there was a rapid expansion in colony area, initially associated with a decrease in burrow density, and then a gradual increase in burrow occupancy (Bertram 1995, Taylor et al.

Book Description
Breeding along the northern Pacific coast from British Columbia to Japan, this little known bird dwelt in relative obscurity until it became the focus of a conservation debate which has resulted in a new National Park in the Queen Charlotte Islands, where half the world's population breeds. It made the headlines again when a lost, lone bird suddenly appeared at Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel, England, in May 1990 and again in April 1991. The Ancient Murrelet and its three congeners are unique amongst seabirds in that their young are entirely precocial, leaving the nest as soon as they hatch to grow up at sea. Tony Gaston has carried out the only detailed study of the bird, in the fine mature coastal forests of the Queen Charlotte Islands. His work has revealed their complex social behaviour, the song behaviour of the males and the species' response to the variety of predators which they face - from Peregrines to Deer Mice. His story is set against a survey of the species worldwide and the grandeur of the northwest Pacific coast. The illustrations of Ian Jones, who also assisted with the research, capture the bird and its environment beautifully.
