Old Brooklyn was originally settled in 1814 as the hamlet of Brighton. Indian trails were the basis for what became Pearl, Broadview, and Schaaf Roads. Brighton Village, centered around what is now the intersection of Pearl and Broadview Roads, was incorporated for one year in 1838. Brighton was originally laid out on land belonging to a farmer named Warren Young. Another incorporation in 1889 renamed the village South Brooklyn, and it was then annexed by the City of Cleveland in 1905 because of its light plant. Gustave Ruetenik & Sons introduced greenhouse gardening on Schaaf Road in 1887, giving the area the title Greenhouse Capital of the United States. Old Brooklyn also became home to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in 1916."

Weirton was originally settled as the village of Hollidays Cove, a strategic fortification along the Ohio River in northwestern Virginia. In 1909, a tinplate mill was established in northern Hollidays Cove, and Weirton was born. Thousands of immigrants of many nationalities came here to work and live, while Ernest T. Weir created his lifes dream of a fully integrated steel plant. Weirton became the Largest Unincorporated Town in the Country and remained unincorporated for 38 years. In 1947, Weirton combined with Hollidays Cove, Weirton Heights, and Marland Heights to become the official City of Weirton. Thomas E. Millsop, president of Weirton Steel Co., became the first mayor, and the mill became a major factor in the citys success. Many historic moments, including the record snowfall of Thanksgiving weekend 1950, were highlighted in the Weirton Steel Employees Bulletin. Weirton captures this event and tells the story of the New City, which thrived in the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1897 the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company founded Windber as a company town for its miners in the bituminous coal country of Pennsylvania. The Miners of Windber chronicles the coming of unionization to Windber, from the 1890s, when thousands of new immigrants flooded Pennsylvania in search of work, through the New Deal era of the 1930s, when the miners' rights to organize, join the United Mine Workers of America, and bargain collectively were recognized after years of bitter struggle. Mildred Allen Beik, a Windber native whose father entered the coal mines at age eleven in 1914, explores the struggle of miners and their families against the company, whose repressive policies encroached on every part of their lives. That Windber's population represented twenty-five different nationalities, including Slovaks, Hungarians, Poles, Italians, and Carpatho-Russians, was a potential obstacle to the solidarity of miners. Beik, however, shows how the immigrants overcame ethnic fragmentation by banding together as a class to unionize the mines. Work, family, church, fraternal societies, and civic institutions all proved critical as men and women alike adapted to new working conditions and to a new culture. Circumstance, if not principle, forced miners to embrace cultural pluralism in their fight for greater democracy, reforms of capitalism, and an inclusive, working-class, definition of what it meant to be an American. Beik draws on a wide variety of sources, including oral histories gathered from thirty-five of the oldest living immigrants in Windber, foreign-language newspapers, fraternal society collections, church manuscripts, public documents, union records, and census materials. The struggles of Windber's diverse working class undeniably mirror the efforts of working people everywhere to democratize the undemocratic America they knew. Their history suggests some of the possibilities and limitations, strengths and weaknesses, of worker protest in the early twentieth century.

If the Elizabethtown & Somerville Railroad had not laid tracks through the area in 1840, Dunellen would not exist today. In 1867, the Central New Jersey Land Improvement Company founded Dunellen from a small slice of Piscataway. Their vision was to create a bedroom community for New York City that offered stores and services to support residents; in 1887, Dunellen was incorporated as a borough. Called the "Emerald of the Plain," Dunellen was promoted as a resort with stagecoaches taking tourists from the Railroad Depot to Washington Rock and other resort locations several times a day. By the turn of the century, Dunellen had become an industrialized community with companies specializing in steel fabrication, printing, and brick and concrete block production. Our appeal to the people of this town for photos, stories and relics of this community's past was met with an outpouring of material. Residents were generous with the photos of their family and friends engaged in clubs and activities, working at businesses and at their homes. They brought us wonderful stories about the history of the town and its evolution. We sincerely thank them for their contributions.
