Book Description
"Spillover and Mobility of Species and Solid Surfaces" collects the papers which were presented at the Fifth International Conference Spillover, either as oral or poster contributions, as well as the summaries of the invited lectures. This congress and its publication in the Studies on Surface Science and Catalysis series follow the tradition of previous conferences on spillover, initiated in Lyon, 1983, and continued in Leipzig, 1989, Kyoto 1993 and Dalian, 1997. For the fifth conference, held in S.L. el Escorial (Madrid), the organising committee has attempted to compile representative contributions which illustrate the advances in understanding the spillover phenomenon since 1997. Spillover is a process taking place during the interface of gas reactant molecules (mainly hydrogen and oxygen) on solid surfaces. However, different contributions to the more general area of the chemistry at surfaces, related with the mobility and migration of species, diffusion through membranes, fuel cell catalysts, etc., have also been included. In fact the title of the present volume summarizes this attempt to extend the conference topics towards dynamics at surfaces.Among the 70 contributions received, the 56 accepted papers were selected on the basis of the reports of at least two international reviewers, according to standards comparable to those applied for other specialised journals. These papers are from 21 different countries.

Book Description
The spillover effect is one of the most promising factors in the enhancement of catalytic reaction rates. The spillover phenemenon was found in the 1960s by several research groups independently. It was defined at the previous International Symposium on Spillover as follows Spillover involves the transport of active species which are adsorbed or formed on a first phase onto another phase that does not adsorb or form the species under the same condition. However, this effect appears typically in the dynamic state, i.e., during reactions, which advance with a considerable reaction rate. This makes it difficult to elucidate the spillover effect through static methods. Therefore, more fundamental investigations are necessary. The development of alternative energy sources and protection of the environment demands highly selective and very rapid catalytic reactions at deviating conditions. To achieve these goals new concepts, such as the spillover effect, are needed. This proceedings book, which comprises 80 papers, contains methods for preparing catalysts in order to realize spillover effects and suggests the most probable mechanisms to explain these non-linear phenomena. It also contains studies on applications of the spillover effect to improve industrial catalytic processes. The book will be invaluable in the development of industrial catalysts and for solving energy and environmental protection problems.

Book Description
This fourth spillover conference in Dalian exhibits advances and new results in spillover studies since 1993. In the proceedings, 5 invited lectures, 23 oral and 28 poster presentations are collected. In the 5 invited lectures, the active research areas are reviewed by well recognized scientists in the relevant fields. The first lecture highlights the fact that spillover plays a significant role in controlling the dynamic state of catalysts when it occurs in the catalytic process. The second lecture studies the surface mobility of oxygen and hydrogen using isotopic exchange method, and the impact of surface mobility on many catalytic processes is discussed. In the third paper the acidic functions of spilt-over hydrogen in a number of acid catalyzed reactions are well clarified. Subsequently, the fourth lecture explores electrochemically controlled spillover phenomenon over mm distances directly observed on metal catalysts. Finally, the last lecture reports the spontaneous dispersion of compounds onto supports and its importance in catalysis, and concludes that surface migration is a quite common process. The conference papers present a number of aspects of spillover studies, such as new spillover phenomena, new methods for spillover characterization, spillover effects in catalysis, etc. Studies on migration and mobility of surface species are also included in the conference topics, as it is believed that the migration of species is a more general phenomenon, and spillover can be considered as a special case of migration. The spillover of hydrogen and oxygen is the major issue at the conference, while the spillover of larger molecules are reported as well in some papers. Simulation and modeling of spillover and surface mobility are also a very interesting subject in the meeting.

Book Description
The Symposium was held to honour the memory of the late Dr. A.J. Tench who made numerous important contributions to our knowledge of the structure, reactivity and adsorption properties of oxide surfaces. This volume contains an up-to-date picture of adsorption and catalysis on oxide surfaces, not in the form of a comprehensive review but in its living aspects of work in progress. It describes detailed studies on the determination of the coordination surface ions, particularly oxide ions, by photoluminescence and reflectance spectroscopy, on the identification of adsorbed species by magnetic optical or surface techniques and on catalysis, with emphasis on new concepts such as catalysis involving excited states or structure sensitive reactions.Professionals working in the industrial and academic laboratories will find the book particularly useful as it provides a state-of-the-art account of our understanding of the structure and adsorption characteristics of oxide surfaces. Contained in the book are first class research papers by leading exponents in this field. A very important issue is that the book highlights for the first time the importance of excited states and structure sensitivity in determining the behaviour of oxide surfaces.

Book Description
The basic idea of the NATO International Exchange Program for funding an Advanced Research Workshop on "Chemical Reactions in Organic and Inorganic Constrained Systems" was to contribute to a better under standing of the influence of configurational constraints on reaction mechanisms, as imposed on reagents by organic or inorganic templates. The original character of the Workshop was to bring together organic and inorganic chemists with this common interest in order to promote the exchange of ideas and, eventually, interdisciplinary research. All the participants to the Workshop agreed that the discussions were stimulating and fruitful. The judgement of the reader of the Proceedings may perhaps be more restrictive because the director (Professor J. J. FRIPIAT) and co-director (Professor P. SINAY), faced with the impossible task of covering such an enormous domain, were obliged to select, somewhat arbitrarily, a limited number of topics which seemed to them to be the most important. Their choice may be discussed and there surely are important gaps, with fields which were not considered. However, both organisers believe that, within the limited span of time and number of contributors, most of the exciting areas were addressed. Dr. WARNHEIM was kind enough to write a commentary on the Workshop; his summary, written with the hindsight of a few weeks, supports, we believe, this opinion. Dr. SETTON has accepted the burden of collecting and shaping (not selectively) the manuscripts. This book would not be what it is without his efficient contribution as scientific secretary of the Workshop.
