Book Description
Lena Daumanns's thesis describes structural and functional studies of the enzyme Glycerophosphodiesterase (GpdQ) from Enterobacter aerogenes. It also examines the properties of small mimics of this enzyme and related binuclear metallohydrolases such as the metallo-ß-lactamases to enhance our understanding of hydrolytic cleavage of important substrates like phosphoesters and β-lactams. Overall, this project has led to a better understanding of the metal ion binding and active site structural features of the enzyme GpdQ. Daumann describes how she successfully immobilized phosphoesterase and related biomimetics on solid supports for potential applications in the area of bioremediation of organophosphate pesticides. Analysis shows that both the enzyme and biomimetics can be stored on the solid support without loss of activity. Furthermore, the author specroscopically and mechanistically characterized a number of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Co(II) complexes, some of which are among the most active biomimetics towards organophosphates reported to date. This thesis makes excellent reading for non-specialists because each chapter includes a short introduction section.

Book Description
Reactions catalyzed by metalloenzymes have great potential for applications in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. While only a few of these enzymes have yet been used in such applications, in the last few decades numerous efficient, selective, environmentally friendly and economical synthetic analogues have been described, including supramolecular, polymeric, nanoparticulate and lowmolecular- weight organometallic complexes, and metal organic frameworks. In this Research Topic, we present a collection of original research and review articles that show significant recent advances made in the rational design of such artificial metalloenzymes.

Book Description
Biomimicry for Materials, Design and Habitats: Innovations and Applications and is a survey of the recent work of recognized experts in a variety of fields who employ biomimicry and related paradigms to solve key problems of interest within design, science, technology, and society. Topics covered include innovations from biomimicry in materials, product design, architecture, and biological sciences. The book is a useful resource for educators, designers, researchers, engineers, and materials scientists, taking them from the theory behind biomimicry to real world applications. Living systems have evolved innovative solutions to challenges that humans face on a daily basis. Nonlinear multifunctional systems that have a symbiotic relationship with their environment are the domain of nature. Morphological solutions for buildings inspired by nature can be used for skins, surfaces, and structures to facilitate environmental adaptation of buildings to increase occupant comfort and reduce energy demands. Birds can teach us to produce novel structures, 3D printing can be informed by oysters and mussels, and mycelium may show us the way to fabricate new biocomposites in architecture. Therefore, it is in nature that we seek inspiration for the solutions to tomorrow's challenges. - Presents new directions in education and the various applications of biomimicry within industry, including bio-inspired entrepreneurship - Discusses the role of biomimicry in education, innovation, and product design - Covers applications in systems engineering and design, novel materials with applications in 3D printing, and bio-inspired architecture - Includes perspectives on sustainability detailing the role that bio-inspiration or biomimicry plays in sustainability

Book Description
Even though a significant amount of structural information is now available for NHases, details of the enzymatic reaction remain unknown. The research presented herein focuses on the purification and detailed kinetic characterization of a thermally stable Co-type NHase. Based on these data, a novel catalytic mechanism is proposed for NHase enzymes.

Book Description
The methodologies and technologies adaptable to process chemistry are the focus of this unique book, as new catalysts, reactions, and methods for the synthesis of functional materials are dealt with in depth for the first time. Those materials take in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, functional materials, chemical raw materials, and other substances in the field of process chemistry including green chemistry. Process chemistry underpins the competitiveness of chemical and pharmaceutical industries, but its stagnation is estimated to cause industrial depression and excessive loss. For that reason, chemists focus on process chemistry consistently so that the development of novel and efficient new reactions and technologies provides an essential stimulus. In addition, this volume describes the important development of selected new synthetic devices for process development and the process design for a larger scale, thus furnishing a valuable source for all who are engaged in process chemistry.

Book Description
Destined to set the standard, this book meets the need for a didactic textbook focusing on the role of model systems in bioinorganic chemistry. The first part features concepts in bioinorganic chemistry such as electron transfer, medicinal inorganic chemistry, bioorganometallics and metal DNA complexes, while the second part presents inorganic model chemistry on metallo-enzymes, organized by metal ion. Experts in the pertinent fields provide a didactically well-organized background on relevant biological systems, as well as on their structural, functional and spectroscopic properties. All chapters are similarly structured, each one beginning with a timeline featuring the most important historical facts on the subject, followed by a table of the most significant enzymes. The authors also summarize key developments and open questions within the respective model systems. This book is aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students in chemistry, biochemistry, life science and related fields.

Book Description
The first supplement to the three volume reference work "Comprehensive Asymmetric Catalysis" critically reviews new developments to the hottest topics in the field written by recognised experts. Eleven chapters which are already in the major reference work have been supplemented and additionally five new chapters have been included. Thus the state-of-the art in this area is now re-established. Together with the basic three volume book set this supplement is not only the principal reference source for synthetic organic chemists, but also for all scientific researchers who use chiral compounds in their work (for example, in biochemical investigations and molecular medicine) as well as for pharmaceutical chemists and other industrial researchers who prepare chiral compounds.
