The development and characterisation of open loop control methods for spatiotemporal optical structures were the main objectives treated in this thesis. For this purpose, the LCLV single feedback system, which was chosen as model system, is particularly well suited due to large variety of patterns found in the system and because the system exhibits extremely large aspect ratios. Since the principal behaviour of the LCLV system had been explored before and the self-organised patterns spontaneously forming in the systems were known my main interest was to study the control the spontaneous behaviour of dissipative optical solitons and to explore spatio– temporal synchronisation in the LCLV system. Prior to the treatment of the main objective: Control of the LCLV single feedback system, I have in a small excursion reported on the modulation instability of incoherent optical beams propagating in photorefractive media. In this context, it was shown that both a first threshold of modulation instability, where the uniform beam breaks up into stripes, and the secondary threshold, where the beam completely breaks up into two dimensional filaments, can be controlled by changing the degree of the beam’s spatial coherence. In studying the control of modulation instability with incoherent beam a key prerequisite for controlling the interaction behavior of propagating optical solitons has been characterised. Using mutually incoherent or phase engineered optical solitons the interaction behaviour of solitons can be modified enabling the creation of more densely packed soliton arrays.

"Thin-film microoptics" stands for novel types of microoptical components and systems which combine the well-known features of miniaturized optical elements with the specific advantages of thin optical layers. This approach enables for innovative solutions in shaping light fields in spatial, temporal and spectral domain. Low-dispersion and small-angle systems for tailoring and diagnosing laser pulses under extreme conditions as well as VUV-capable microoptics can be realized. Continuous-relief microstructures of refractive, reflective and hybrid characteristics are obtained by vapor deposition technologies with shadow masks in rotating systems. The book gives a comprehensive overview on fundamental laws of microoptics, types of thin-film microoptical components, methods and constraints of their design, fabrication and characterization, structure transfer into substrates, optical functions and applications. Recent theoretical and experimental results of basic and applied research are addressed. Particular emphasis will be laid on the generation of localized, nondiffracting few-cycle wavepackets of extended depth of focus and high tolerance against distortions. It is shown that the spectral interference of ultrabroadband conical beams results in spatio-temporal structures of characteristic X-shape, so-called X-waves, which are interesting for robust optical communication. New prospects are opened by exploiting small conical angles from nanolayer microoptics and self-apodized truncation of Bessel beams leading to the formation of single-maximum nondiffracting beams or "needle beams". The object of this school, held at Cargese, Corsica (France) from August 12th to 24th 1991, was the presentation of the field of guided wave nonlinear optics in a comprehensive, coherent, and heuristic fashion. It seems appropriate that this school began with an historical introduction by Professor Nicolaas Bloembergen of Harvard, the acknowledged "father" of nonlinear optics, in general, and concluded with a round table discussion headed by Dr. Eric Spitz, the Scientific Director of a multinational electronics company interested in developing industrial applications of guided wave nonlinear optics. The lectures covered both the theoretical framework of the field and applications to basic scientific research, optical communications and technical instrumentation. Specific topics developed included materials for guided wave nonlinear optics, nonlinear interactions using integrated optical guides, nonlinear surface waves, solitons, fiber nonlinear optics, ultra-fast coupler switching as well as the related topic of fiber and integrated optical lasers and amplifiers. Lectures have also been devoted to squeezed states, chaos and strange attractors. The subjects covered by the school underlines one of the major ways in which this field has evolved over the past thirty some odd years. The path from the original experiments with materials requiring mega-watt power lasers to the recent developments in guided wave configurations using milliwatt power diode lasers is marked by the conjunction of ever improving fundamental scientific comprehension and continuing technological developments.
