Her friends sit around in a half-circle, clap ping their hands to mark the measure of the dance. Ole! Ole! They cry, at intervals, in gay applause. Ou a table are half-empty glasses of agita dt'ente; yellow flowers bloom near the door of the little inn, a baby tumbles happily about on the brown earth, and a bird hops in a rough wooden cage. Excerpt from Spanish-American Folk-Songs, Vol. 10 Enormous fortunes were made in the mines, which opened the way to various forms of pleasure and expenditure. Moreover, the rich could get various European luxuries. One reads descriptions in Mme. Calderon de la Barca's letters, and elsewhere, of beautiful dresses and jewels; and in the Museum in Mexico there are wonderful old costumes and pieces of antique furniture. Thomas Gage quotes a by - word of the day: Four things are fair, the women, the apparel, the horses, and the streets. He adds, and the beauty of the coaches, which do exceed in cost the best of the Court of Madrid and other parts of Christendom, for they spare no silver nor. Gold nor precious stones, nor cloth of gold, nor the best of silk from China, to enrich them. Throughout all the Spanish colonies, and from the earliest times, the things from Europe were always sought after and treasured; for they were hard to get, and, if they were lost, there was never any assurance that they could be replaced. In the country regions there was greater simplicity of life as to physical conditions, and mental as well; for schools were few and far between, and outside of Mexico City and Lima, and one or two other university towns, the standards in education were easy-going. We read that books con cerning the Americas could not be delivered there without permission of the proper authorities, and every book had to be registered and described when shipped.1 Profane matter, fabulous matter, and romance were all forbidden by the Inquisition.
