The Ionospheric Institute of the National Observatory of Athens has had two interests in recent years: the study of the ionosphere and the study of the sun. In our previous Advanced Study Institutes in 1960, 1961, and 1962, we have em phasized the ionosphere. For the Advanced Study Institute of 1964, however, we invited Dr. Jules Aarons of the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories to collaborate in preparing and directing a program of studies of the sun, the moon, the planets, and the interplanetary medium. The lectures of this Advanced Study Institute form essentially an advanced course in radio astronomy. Without being a textbook on the matter, we feel that the present book can be considered as an excellent reference for those students starting their research work in the field of solar system radio astronomy. All lecturers tried to present their subjects in a simple form based upon their exten sive personal experience, but without emphasizing their personal research. We must recognize that it was an excellent achievement for them to keep their text exactly at the level indicated by the Program Director, and outlined by the gen eral program of Advanced Study Institutes of NATO. We are deeply grateful to all the invited scientists for their outstanding contributions in lecturing on their subjects in a clear and authoritative manner. The Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, in its aid to basic research, spon sors various programs. Among them is the Program of Advanced Study Institutes.

The present volume contains papers presented during the Advanced Study Institute on the 'Structure and Evolution of the Galaxy' held under the auspices of the Science Committee, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Lagonissi near Athens, Greece between 8-19 September 1969. Seventeen astronomers from eight countries acted as lecturers in the Institute, which was attended by sixty-three students from twelve countries. All the lectures given in the Institute were included in the volume with the exception of two lectures given by Professor P. van de Kamp on 'Stellar Parallaxes' and 'Objects of Very Low Mass', the manuscripts of which were not submitted in time in order to be considered for publication. It is obviously impossible in a two-weeks course to cover the vast field of the Struc ture and Evolution of the Galaxy in all its aspects. Effort has been made, however, to give the students a general outline of the field. In addition to the lectures ample time was spent in discussions and personal contacts. In order to simplify the publica tion it was felt reasonable, however, not to include the discussions in the present volume.

This volume consists of invited talks and contributed papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute "The Post Recombination Universe" which was held in Cambridge in the summer of 1987. There have, in recent years, been numerous meetings devoted to problems in observational cosmology. The attention given reflects the exciting rate of de velopment of the subject, and a survey of the proceedings from these symposia reveals that a great deal of emphasis has been given to consideration of the very early universe on the one hand, and to large scale structure in the universe at the present epoch on the other. The theme of this meeting was chosen to comple ment these efforts by focussing on the state of the universe at quite early times, but at those epochs which are still accessible to direct observations. The meet ing provided a broad coverage of the post recombination universe by drawing on experts from a wide variety of fields covering theory, background radiation fields and discrete sources at high redshift. Events in the moderately early universe will have left their mark in a great range of wavebands, from X-rays to the microwave region, and the evolution of the universe can be revealed by studies of the inter galactic medium, gravitational lensing and the abundance and clustering of high redshift sources. All of these subjects received much attention at the meeting, and the papers demonstrate the rich interplay between these areas in the rapidly expanding world of observational cosmology.
