Austrian manufacturers, 'to preserve their trade, had to trans planttheir factories to Hungary. 1to repress this new-bow spirit the-court at Vienna fell upon the device of appointing paid Imperial commissioners at the'vh'ead of'the counties, instead _of' the lord-lieutenants, who were the old constitutional heads. This the more stirred agitation. The reform leaders from every quarter of the king dom met at Pesth, during the quarterly fairs of 1846 and 1847, to which the people from all, parts came, the nee'dful measures of reform were publicly discussed one by one, and in every detail determined; Atxthe head 'of this movementpas chairman of the meetings, was the late Count Louis Batthyani. Kossuth made able speeches, and rose in popularity; he was not merely eloquent, but practical. Batthyani/ felt his im portance, and exerted himself to, the utmost to 'secure his election to the Diet for the county of Pesth. The Diet met in November, 1847. Previously, the project of re form of the Liberals had 'be)en' published, and, immediately the Diet met, .the law abolishing the 'feudal service of the tenants and - the immunity of the nobles from tax artion passed the Lower House. These essays by John Nevin, theologian of Mercersburg Theology, are united by two primary themes: Part 1 documents Nevin’s noteworthy and innovative application of idealist philosophy to Reformed theology in antebellum America. American Christians largely rejected any inherited philosophical discipline or categories, claiming the right to invent moral and religious reality without attention to Christian tradition. The paradoxical result was authoritarian rationalism: religious doctrines imitated scientific reasoning (“common-sense” philosophy) but were imposed by ecclesiastical fiat. In contrast, Nevin summoned his fellow theologians to pay fresh attention to the Idea: the rational unpacking of transcendent truths in being, moral right, and revelation. Part 2 then documents his criticism of the predominant Christian alternatives in the mid-nineteenth century. Such alternatives were deeply flawed, Nevin thought, as they necessitated that supernatural reality be experienced through an external authority demanding assent and obedience—the pope, a body of bishops, an authoritative Bible. But for Nevin, “supernature” is Jesus Christ himself who generates and sustains the reality of which the church speaks. Thus the highest Idea was Jesus Christ, now incarnate in the history and sacramental and liturgical life of the church.
