Book Description
Excerpt from Short Lectures on Sanitary Subjects While avoiding as far as possible all controverted and still unsettled points, the aim of these papers being prae tical rather than speculative, it has been found necessary to explain the mode by which infectious diseases are sup posed to be propagated. The weight of sound scientific opinion throughout Europe being in favour of the germ theory, that theory has been accordingly adopted, the more readily as it is emphatically a theory on the safe side. The precautions it points out cannot possibly do any harm, if the theory is not true, whereas if 'it is true - as it is believed to be-the neglect of them must be productive of wide spread evil and destruction. Technical terms have been as far as possible avoided, and where they of necessity occur their meaning is clearly explained. Book Description
Excerpt from Short Lectures on Sanitary Subjects It has been always a truth, though, until latterly, a truth by no means widely accepted, that a large experience in disease was the most secure guide in seeking out the means by which that evil might be avoided or prevented and the public health improved. A more correct appreciation of the present position of Sanitary Science has, however, led to a most important change in this respect; and Simpson and Gairdencr, in Scotland; Paget and Rumsey, in England; and Stokes and Hudson, in Ireland, with a host of other distinguished physicians, have brought the light of their vast clinical experience to bear upon sanitary problems with excellent results, in their better elucidation and more exact application. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Sanitary and Applied Chemistry: Or the Chemistry of Water, Air, and Food Although primarily intended for use as a textbook, much scattered material is here collected from Govern ment Reports and elsewhere, so that it is believed the book will prove valuable for general information and ref erence. The difficulty of condensing, without sacrificing something in clearness, is thoroughly recognized. Some simple reactions in general and organic chemistry have, it is true, been introduced, but it is believed that they are of _a kind to be readily understood by students, with a little explanation from the instructor. It would be well to supplement the text by lectures on the topics studied and also to give time for discussions. The author believes that a practical method for teaching the subject, if a sufficient number of books of reference are at hand, is to outline topically the subject to be studied and require a preparation on those topics from the student. Book Description
Excerpt from Sanitary Disposal of the Dead: A Lecture Delivered by Dr. C. N. Peirce, at St. George's Hall, Sunday, October 11, 1891 Hen invited by the lecture committee of the Ethical Culture Society of Philadelphia to read before them a short paper, I was but a few mo ments in deciding that upon no subject could I more profitably entertain that body for an hour than by presenting an arranged collection of already published statements concerning the ethical and sanitary dis position of the dead. This pleasurable task was performed without any view of the result being published; so, when the Cremation Society of Philadelphia requested my manuscript, thinking it worthy of wider publicity, I could not surrender it without placing on record my deep _obligation to the following authors, from whom I have obtained most of whatever there is of value in the paper. While I have occasionally added a word and at other times omitted one, I trust I have not in any case misrepresented the author from whom I have quoted.
