Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons, Prayers, and Pulpit Addresses Who it was that penned the ms. There is no means of knowing, nor is it likely that this will ever be discovered. Most probably he was a resident in St Andrews. But whoever he was, he appears to have executed his task, (if that can be called a task, which seems to have been a labour of love, ) with exemplary fidelity and accuracy. That he was an ardent admirer of Henderson there can be no doubt, and we may fairly enough conjecture that he was led to wait on his ministry at this time, and take down everything that fell from his lips, even to his very prayers, by a sense of the supreme importance of his public utterances at such a crisis in the history of the church and kingdom of Scotland. Judging from the character of the MS we should say that this unknown person was a man of intelligence and educa tion, though not deeply skilled in the learned tongues. Book Description
Excerpt from Pulpit Prayers O Lord our God, from Whom cometh every good and perfect gift, give us, we pray Thee, the consciousness of Thy presence in this hour of worship, and grant that whatever we may each of us most need for our inward life we may find here and now. Draw our hearts to Thyself, we beseech Thee; prepare us for better service; help each of us to pass beyond the outward forms of worship; and to come, in the silence of our minds, into the secret place of the Most High. Flash Thy truth upon all our hearts and minds, help us in hearing and in speaking, bless us each as we severally require, receive our thanks for the individual and private blessings which we each possess, and for the universal gift which we each may have - the unspeakable gift of God in Jesus Christ. Hear us, we pray Thee, and grant us Thy presence and help now, for our Saviour Christ's sake. O Lord, we thank Thee that Thou hast, in some measure, drawn back the veil, and shown us the things which are at Thy right hand. And we beseech Thee to help each of us, so long as we tarry here below, that we may press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Book Description
Excerpt from The Anglican Pulpit Library: Sermons; Outlines; Illustrations; For the Sundays and Holy Days of the Year It seems to me that on this day we can hardly give our first thought to ourselves and to the benefits the Resurrection of Jesus has brought to our Christian life. It would be strange and quite too egotistical if we could so soon pass from the great lesson the Church has put before us these last days in the suffering Saviour, and His personal battle with the powers of sin and death, to think first of all of our own part in His death and Resurrection. We must come to this soon, and thank Him with all the joy of our hearts, all the service of natures ransomed by His sacrifice for the deliver ance of our souls, for our personal joy in His Resurrection. But I call upon you first of all - you who have through love trul sym pathised with the agony of Thursday night, with the pain an agony and bitter death struggle of Good Friday, the battle with sin and its apparent failure as Jesus bowed His sacred head u on the Cross of ignominy - to try and share, as far as you can, t e feelings of Jesus Himself, as, coming back through the gloom and failure of the tomb, He rises on Easter morning from the dead. He regains His body, and finds it the same but glorified, and realises His triumph over sin and death, and finds in His victory the assurance of the victory of righteousness for ever, and of the salvation of the precious souls of the men for whom His fight was fought. Book Description
Excerpt from The Centenary Pulpit: A Collection of Pastoral Prayers Help us to understand that we fulfill our high calling under God in the fidelity which we show in the dark day and in the difficult place. We come lifting before Thee our prayer for all those-of any name or sign who this holy day come to Thee in devout worship. Make real to them, we pray Thee, the treasures of grace - a fresh sense of Thy presence, a new confidence in Thee - the pressure of the guiding Hand - the leading of the kindly Light. But we come praying, likewise, for those who do not look to Thee in humble and devout worship but who should; not less needy because unconscious of their need - for them, too, we pray that something may come, something may happen; some word, some remembrance, some bit of longing that will turn wayward thoughts and willful spirits to the great source of life. Thou art the fountain freely flowing for us all. Help us to hear the voice of the Son of God as He calls us to stoop down and to drink and to live. And let, we humbly pray, the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts, no less, be acceptable in Thy sight, 0 Lord, our strength and our redeemer. Amen. Lord, Thou hast searched us and known us. Thou knowest our downsitting and our uprising. Thou under standest our thoughts afar off and art acquainted with all our ways. Whither shall we go from Thy spirit or whither shall we flee from Thy presence? If we ascend up into heaven Thou art there - far beyond our highest thought, our noblest concept. And if we make our beds in hell Thou art there, for no one of us may fall lower or wander farther than Thy mercy. Thine is the light that follows all our way and the love that will not let us go. If we say that darkness will conceal us - darkness and light are both alike to Thee. Search us, 0 God, and know our hearts. Try us and know our thoughts. See if there be any wicked way in us and lead us in the way everlasting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Anglican Pulpit Library: Sermons, Outlines, Illustrations for Sundays and Holy Days of the Year, Original and Selected; Epiphany to Septuagesima Have chosen this thought as a motto for Epiphany partly because I am sure that nothing gives such strength to everything we have to do or bear as the simple witness of your own conscience, that your desire is in everything to glorify God. For so God has ordered it, that then are we efficient, and then are we happy, when His ends are our ends. The end always determines the course; and the secret of beginning well, and going on well, is, first, to choose rightly, and then to fix firmly in the mind one great scope. There are many ends and every end is again a means to a further end, until we arrive at one final end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Prayers From Plymouth Pulpit The most experienced Christians, who attend the religious services of Plymouth Church, have been specially interested in the devotional exercises of that famous pulpit; and have often felt these to be even more impressive than the sermons themselves, which are so greatly sought after. These exercises are found so full of the most elevated thoughts, expressed in such affluent and appropriate words, as to be quite unique in their effect, carrying the sympathizing heart as it were up to the very throne of mercy, and bringing the soul into conscious communion with our Father who is in heaven. The continual diversity of the themes dwelt upon, the copiousness and beauty of the language, the evident absence of formality and pre-arrangement, with the graphic distinctness and completeness of the presentation, make these exercises worthy to be taken as models of extemporaneous prayer. But their highest value is in their fitness to train the hearts of those who earnestly unite in them; and to lead them into the richest experiences of the spirit of prayer, as that consists in the conscious intercourse of the human soul with its Maker. God. My venerable and esteemed friend, the Reverend Doctor John Marsh, so long and widely honored for his useful labors in the Temperance cause, in a frequent attendance at Plymouth Church, found these exercises so attractive and profitable, that he could not but long to renew their impressions. It seemed like a great loss that such glowing words and heavenly thoughts should be heard but once, and never be repeated or recalled. He thereupon conceived the idea of having some of them faithfully reported, so that he might preserve them, first, for his own personal use and satisfaction, and then with the thought that, at some day yet remote, they might perhaps be properly given to the public in print, for the general use of devout hearts. Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons on the Lord's Prayer No one reads a Preface: yet not to write one, would seem to argue stolid indifference, or overweening confidence, as to the success of his efforts, neither of which the author feels. He has, besides, a word or two to say for himself, to the reader of this book. If any are so impatient that they cannot stop to talk with him a moment, he cannot help it. This book may be said to be printed, rather than published; for it is not supposed that it will fall into the hands of many who are not in some way acquainted with the author. It would be idle to weary any one with the reasons which have induced him thus to venture out from his retirement, in the very beginning, as it were, of his ministry. He cannot plead the novel and interesting apology, that he has been "urged," or even "solicited." He has taken the responsibility, and must abide by the consequences. There are some things in this little volume, of which some who read it, perhaps many, may disapprove. The views here promulgated have not been rashly adopted. With a scanty Library, and few counsellors, the author has studied out for himself many of the results presented in these Discourses. He is satisfied that they are correct, and his prayer is, that if they are not, one effect of their publication may be his own conviction of his error. Criticism is neither deprecated nor defied.
