Book Description
Excerpt from Select Letters of Horace Walpole Born in 1717, he grew to manhood during the long political supremacy of his father, the famous Sir Robert Walpole, and acquired instinctively the per sonal and party sentiments natural to a Whig of the Whigs. At Eton he made intimate friendships in a circle of clever and fashionable lads of his own sphere of society - scions of Society, in fact - for England then possessed but one, and in it were concentrated the fashion, the power, the wealth, and a good deal of the intellect of England. Book Description
Excerpt from Horace Walpole's Letters: A Selection Is letter writing, in the artistic sense, a lost accomplishment? There are plenty of people who would not linger long over a reply. It is often asserted that Rowland Hill and the penny post killed the old-fashioned style of letter. That is not true, however, for it survived in old-fashioned hands into the mid-Victorian era, when it received its coup dc grace by the invention of what our fathers, when in a superior mood, called that "modern abomination," the ubiquitous post-card. Correspondence has since its advent grown pithy, brisk, prosaic. The majority of men have not the time in this cast- iron, express- paced age, with its telegraphs and telephones, and constant business and social demands, for the old elaborate letter of genial gossip and kindly compliment. Sentiment, some would even say, is at a discount, and whatever may be the cause, imagination and fancy, to say nothing of wit and humour, have grown curiously rare under a penny stamp. The world is too much with us now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Some Unpublished Letters of Horace Walpole Mr. Walpole, omitted to do so from 1774; and Mr. Walpole was compelled, with the concurrence of the Bank, and on the advice of its counsel, to make the Alexanders bankrupts and 'prosecute' the possession of the mortgaged estates. The suit, which was instituted in the Court of Chancery in Granada, was protracted till 1779, when the Governor, Lord Macartney, who was also Chancellor of the island, at last fixed a day for pronouncing his decree. Before judgment was delivered, however, the island, by a rare stroke of illfortune, was cap tured by the French; and Lord Macartney, perhaps a little ashamed of delays partly of his owri making, signed a declaration of his intended decree, which was entirely in Mr. Walpole's favour.
