This report describes the first stage of an investigation into the performance of masonry veneer on framed backing walls under seismic loading. Both elemental tests on veneer ties and dynamic tests on full-scale walls were carried out. The report concludes that the current practice of installing ties by hammering nails into the framing is unsatisfactory, and results in poor performance under seismic loading. The report recommends changes in tie installation procedures to overcome this. A further conclusion is that the criteria for tie performance as currently covered by international standards, and the test methods to establish code compliance, are unsatisfactory. Suggested directions for improvemenbt are listed.

This dissertation presents an experimental and analytical evaluation of the seismic performance of clay masonry veneer in wood-stud buildings. The experimental program involved the shaking-table testing of eleven wall assemblies as well as a full-scale one-story building. Walls were subjected to separate in- and out-of-plane seismic excitation. The specimens had different anchor types, anchor spacing, aspect ratio, presence and absence of joint reinforcement and window openings. All the specimens were designed and constructed in accordance with the prescriptive requirements of the MSJC for masonry veneer for Seismic Design Categories D and E. The shaking-table tests showed that veneer complying with the current MSJC provisions can sustain ground motions far in excess of representative Design Basis and Maximum Considered Earthquakes for Seismic Design Categories D and E. The out-of-plane response was governed by the anchor axial strength. The in-plane response was characterized by veneer sliding for the squat panels and a combination of rocking and sliding for the slender ones. Experiments showed the possible reduction of the extraction capacities of the nails due to high moisture content in wood studs. Test data showed that veneers oriented parallel to the direction of shaking could restrain the wood structure. However, slender rocking veneer panels would induce additional seismic force to the wood structure under severe excitation. In the analytical phase of the research, numerical models were developed and calibrated by the experimental results. The models were capable of capturing the displacement and acceleration responses of the tested specimens as well as the failure mechanisms. The models were used to conduct parametric studies to examine the influence of different design variables on veneer response, including the effect of in-plane veneer on the seismic performance of wood-stud shear walls, and the behavior of two-story veneers under out-of-plane seismic excitation. The dissertation finally proposes a set of recommendations to improve current design provisions. Results highlighted the need for a minimum anchor strength requirement to assure a satisfactory level of performance under the Design Basis and Maximum Considered Earthquakes. The mass of the squat veneers oriented parallel to the direction of motion should not be treated as merely added mass.

The research described here is part of a multi-university project on "Performance-based Design of New Masonry Structures." Within the context of that project, the main objectives of this research was to study the inelastic seismic performance of low-rise concrete masonry structures with clay masonry veneer and veneer connectors; to develop analytical models for those structures and the elements comprising them; and to use the results of the research to propose refinements to current design provisions for concrete masonry with clay masonry veneer. The experimental work described here includes the design and testing of concrete masonry wall specimens with clay masonry veneer under quasi-static loading. Identical specimens were subjected to shake-table testing at another university. The experimental work described here also includes the design of a full-scale, one-story concrete masonry building specimen with clay masonry veneer. That building specimen was subjected to shake-table testing at another university. The analytical work of this research includes the development of nonlinear hysteretic models for concrete masonry walls, clay masonry veneer and veneer connectors. The analytical models for wall specimens were calibrated using the results of the quasi-static and shake-table tests of wall specimens. The analytical model for the building specimen was compared with and refined using shake-table test results for the building specimen. Finally, the calibrated and refined analytical model of the building specimen was used for parameter studies intended to supply general information about the behavior of low-rise reinforced concrete masonry structures with clay masonry veneer. Based on the these experimental and analytical results, basic concepts of the seismic response and design of low-rise concrete masonry buildings were reaffirmed; most design and construction requirements of the 2008 MSJC Code and Specification were reaffirmed; and several recommendations were made to improve those requirements.

A study was conducted on the out-of-plane seismic performance of anchored brick veneer with woodframe backup wall systems, to evaluate prescriptive design requirements and current construction practices. Prescriptive requirements for the design and construction of anchored brick veneer are currently provided by the Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC) Building Code, the International Residential Code (IRC) for One- and Two-Family Dwellings, and the Brick Industry Association (BIA) Technical Notes. Laboratory tests were conducted on brick-tie-wood subassemblies, comprising two bricks with a corrugated sheet metal tie either nail- or screw-attached to a wood stud, permitting an evaluation of the stiffness, strength, and failure modes for a local portion of a veneer wall system, rather than just of a single tie by itself. Then, full-scale brick veneer wall specimens (two one-story solid walls, as well as a one-and-a-half story wall with a window opening and a gable region) were tested under static and dynamic out-of-plane loading on a shake table. The shake table tests captured the performance of brick veneer wall systems, including interaction and load-sharing between the brick veneer, corrugated sheet metal ties, and wood-frame backup. Finally, all of these test results were used to develop finite element models of brick veneer wall systems, including nonlinear inelastic properties for the tie connections. The experimental and analytical studies showed that the out-of-plane seismic performance of residential anchored brick veneer walls is generally governed by: tensile stiffness and strength properties of the tie connections, as controlled by tie installation details; overall grid spacing of the tie connections, especially for tie installation along the edges and in the upper regions of walls; and, overall wall geometric variations. Damage limit states for single-story residential brick veneer wall systems were established from the experimental and analytical studies as a function of tensile failure of key tie connections, and the seismic fragility of this form of construction was then evaluated. Based on the overall findings, it is recommended that codes incorporate specific requirements for tie connection installation along all brick veneer wall edges, as well as for tie connection installation at reduced spacings in the upper regions of wall panels and near stiffer regions of the backup. Residential anchored brick veneer construction should as a minimum be built in accordance with the current prescriptive code requirements and recommendations, throughout low to moderate seismicity regions of the central and eastern U.S., whereas non-compliant methods of construction commonly substituted in practice are generally not acceptable.
