Book Description
Excerpt from Growth, Mortality, and Regeneration After Cutting in Loblolly Pine Pulpwood Stands Good forest management policy today would not accept the rather crude short-rotation cutting methods as practiced in this early study. New methods of seed-tree selection and stimulation, seedbed preparation, and control of inferior understory species are some of the techniques considered advisable to secure satisfactory regeneration. However, there are large acreages of loblolly pine stands not under intensive management which are still being cut by some of the methods practiced in this study. The records of growth, mortality, and regeneration during the 9-year period following cutting by the six methods tested provide some useful information regarding these stands. Book Description
Excerpt from Loblolly Pine Seed Tree Mortality, Vol. 6 The 8 best seed-producing pines, or one-quarter of the pine stands, were left to reseed each acre when the timber was harvested from mature stands. Crawler tractors were used in logging. Cultural operations designed to improve the seedbed and reduce competition from undesirable plants were used on some of the areas. One-half of the logged areas were burned and one quarter disked to improve the seedbed. Some seed trees were injured during the logging and in the burning operations. Eight percent of the seed trees were severely damaged in logging and 5 percent of the injured trees died. A record of mortality showed that less than 1 percent of the seed trees died per year for all seed-tree areas during the average regeneration period of years. The increased seed-tree mortality due to the burning treatment was approximately equal to the average lightning mortality for the period. A number of trees died with no external evidence of injury. Lightning and wind caused over half the mortality during the period the trees had to stand to re seed the area. Book Description
Excerpt from Guidelines for Direct-Seeding Loblolly Pine Loblolly seed can readily be kept for 5 years or more. High viability will be maintained if the seed is dried to 8 or 10 percent moisture content, placed in sealed containers, and stored at a temperature between 0°f. And 3z°f. Four prerequisites for successful storage are: (1) collection of fully ripe cones, (2) careful stor age of cones in a well-ventilated building to prevent molding before they go into the kiln, (3) processing of cones within 60 days after collection, and (4) placing the seed in cold storage immediately after processing. The ease of storing loblolly seed makes pos sible substantial savings. Supplies collected in bumper years can be saved for use in lean years. Not only are cones cheapest when they are most abundant, but seed yields are greatest. Thus, in years of heavy cone crops, yields often average 114 pounds of seed per bushel 'of cones, as contrasted to 1/z to 3a]. Pound when cones are relatively scarce. Pour several gallons of water into the drum about every 2 weeks to keep the moss thoroughly wet, but not saturated. Book Description
Excerpt from Natural Regeneration of Loblolly Pine in the Southeastern Coastal Plain Some tracts will not be scarified enough through skidding, either because the volume to be removed is small or because the logs are lifted off the ground. Other areas will have such a poor seed source that effi cient use must be made of all that is available. Various means of improv ing the seedbed on these tracts are being used effectively under a variety of conditions. These are combined Operations in which the competition from inferior species is reduced at the same time the surface of the soil is disturbed.
