Book Description
Because positive changes in a school's capacity to educate all its students are not automatic, the California Department of Education has launched an educational reform model embodied in a School Improvement Plan (SIP). The model is based on student-centered educational standards (quality criteria) to direct the four SIP processes of planning, implementation, self-study, and program quality review. These processes were developed to engage the school community in activities to improve programs for all student populations. This four-part document has been designed to help members of a quality review team conduct a review of elementary school programs. The review process has been designed for judging the effects of the curriculum, instructional methodologies, and effectiveness strategies on the students; guiding the development of planned assistance; and providing a model for the school's own self-study process. Part I describes how the quality criteria can be used for planning and implementing school improvement initiatives at a school site. Part II is the guide for conducting a school's self-study. Part III describes the methodology and procedures of program quality review, the application of the quality criteria to the school's curriculum and instructional program, and the means for developing suggestions in the report of findings and action plans for improvement. Part IV explains program quality review criteria for 14 areas. (MLH)

Book Description
Second EditionThis book introduces the reader to the principles of assessment of student learning outcomes in the context of program review, and illustrates how to implement a sustainable outcomes-based assessment program review process based on over 30 case studies of exemplary practice across a range of institutional types.Since publication of the first edition just over a decade ago, the landscape of higher education has been transformed. With the emergence of competency-based education, the questioning of the value of a post-secondary degree, the explosion of neuroscientific research, the emphasis on metacognition, as well as demographic changes in who is going to college and why, new questions are being asked and new methods of collecting data have multiplied. This new edition retains the goals of the first--which is to inform institutional self-reflection of how well the organization is achieving its intended purpose--in a manner that is reflective, adaptive, and collaborative, but which recognizes today’s changed environment.Among the new topics Marilee J. Bresciani Ludvik introduces in this edition is how to appropriately connect outcomes-based program review (OBPR) to performance indicators and predictive analytics and develop meaningful new performance metrics to inform our understanding of the student experience. She also addresses the intersection of OBPR with competency-based assessment, introduces the reader to new concepts and terminology, and demonstrates the implications of neuroscientific research for learning and development and how that influences OBPR design. All the cases, a signature feature of the first edition to illustrate best practice, have been replaced for this edition.Bresciani Ludvik postulates the importance of developing institutions as learning organizations where OBPR is designed collaboratively between student services, academic services, business services professionals, and faculty. Each chapter concludes with key learning points as well as questions for organizational leadership to promote ongoing professional development as institutions implement OBPR practices that are appropriate for their specific contexts.

Book Description
This book assesses the impact of globalization on the education systems of key East Asian countries, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, and the "tiger economies" of South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, examining how the increasingly interdependent economic system has driven policy change and education reform. It discusses how policy makers have responded to changes required in educational outcomes in order to equip their societies for new global conditions and explores the impact of new approaches and ideologies related to globalization, such as marketization, privatization, governance changes, managerialism, economic rationalism and neo-liberalism, making comparisons across the region. Based upon in-depth research, fieldwork, literature analysis, policy document analysis and personal reflections of academics serving in the education sector, this volume recounts heated debates about the pros and cons of education restructuring in East Asia. The discussions on national responses and coping strategies in this volume offer highly relevant insights on how globalization has resulted in restructuring and draws lessons from comparative public policy analysis and comparative education studies.
