Excerpt from Second Catalogue of the Holton Library of Brighton: Comprising Rules and Regulations; Names of Officers; Dictionary of Pseudonyms; Donations, With Names of Donors; And Bulletin No. 1 The Brighton Social Library, one of the earliest of the kind in the State, was organized with a Constitution, March 1, 1824. A Catalogue, with the names of the proprietors appended, was soon printed. A second Catalogue, with the Constitution appended, printed by Dutton Wentworth, Boston, was issued January 1, 1836. The Brighton Library Association for the circulation of books, for maintaining courses of public lectures and exercises in declamation, composition and debate, was incorporated in accordance with the Statutes of the Commonwealth, January 15, 1858. Funds for the foundation of the, Library were secured from the proceeds of a social levee and fair given by the ladies of Brighton, New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, 1856. The first catalogue of the Association, a small duodecimo, with an abstract of the Constitution and by-laws appended, was issued in 1857, from the publishing house of Bazin, Morse Co., Boston.
