Book Description
Excerpt from Seances With Carlyle I was awakened about three in the morning by the Sound Of a gentle rain on the roof. The musical patter, patter came with an insistence that drove Sleep away, and every now and again a larger drop fell with an impatient tap. By degrees I realized that a voice was trying to make itself heard through the rhythm Of the Shower, and straining my ears I caught a petulant, Well? Coincident with the splash of an uncommonly large drop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Selections From Carlyle The present volume, it is believed, includes within its narrow limits material adequate for the elementary study of Carlyle in his earliest and most fruitful period. The notes are planned in the main to give aid rather than information or Opinion. By the frequent quotation of supplementary or illustrative passages wherever it was practicable, the plan has been to let the author annotate himself. Occasionally it has seemed natural to call atten tion to some characteristic mode of thought or of expres sion, but in neither case has a set analysis been attempted. The editor's suggestions to the teacher who may use this book are three: First, that some sort of insight into the character of the man Carlyle is essential, not only as a commentary upon, but as an introduction to, the study of his work. Second, that a good deal of additional matter should be read aloud to the class, with a view to familiarizing them with peculiarities of manner which are obstacles only to the unaccustomed ear. And third, that all systematic discussion of style be reserved until the student has had a chance to form an Opinion of his own, and is ready to take a part in the discussion. Book Description
New York Times bestselling author Liz Carlyle continues her enthralling historical series with the story of an impetuous, illegitimate beauty and the forbidding nobleman who protects her—while fighting an obsession to possess her. Miss Zoë Armstrong is beautiful, charming, rich—and utterly unmarriageable. So, while she may be the ton's most sparkling diamond, her choice of husbands looks more like a list of London's most unsavory fortune hunters. Since a true-love marriage seems impossible, Zoë has accepted—no, embraced—her role as society's most incomparable flirt and mischiefmaker...until in one reckless, vulnerable moment, her future is shattered. Stuart Rowland, the brooding Marquess of Mercer, has been part of Zoë's extended family since she was a child. As dark and cynical as Zoë is lively, Mercer has always known they would be the worst possible match...until his scapegrace brother Robert does the unthinkable, and winds up betrothed to Zoë. Now, secluded on Mercer's vast estate to escape a looming scandal and the ton's prying eyes, Zoë and Mercer may find that a dark obsession has become a tempestuous passion that can no longer be denied...

Book Description
Excerpt from The Carlyle Anthology: Selected and Arranged With the Author's Sanction The painfullest feeling is that of your own Feebleness; ever, as Milton says, to be weak is the true misery. And yet of your Strength there is and can be no clear feel ing, save by what you have prospered in, by what you have done. Between vague wavering Capability and fixed indubitable Performance, what a difference! A certain inarticulate Self-consciousness dwells dimly in us, which only our Works can render articulate and decisively discernible. Our Works are the mirror wherein the spirit first sees its natural lineaments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Characteristics of Carlyle The following pages were written as an answer to the question, What are 'the characteristic features which distinguish Carlyle as a Writer and as a Man? They were written mainly with that object. Some critical notes are added on his peculiar opinions on certain social, political, and religious questions, on the estimate to be formed of him as a historian and as a general writer, and, lastly, on his peculiar style of expression, as seen more par ticularly in his later writings. The utmost care has been taken to make this view of Carlyle fair and impartial, to estimate at their true value the great qualities which distinguished. Book Description
Excerpt from Carlyle Year-Book Daughters of Time, the hypocritic Days, Muffled and dumb like barefoot dervishes, And marching single in an endless file, Bring diadems and fagots in their hands. To each they offer gifts after his will, Bread, kingdom, stars, and sky that holds them all. I, in my pleached garden, watched the pomp, Forgot my morning wishes, hastily Took a few herbs and apples, and the Day Turned and departed silent. I too late Under her solemn fillet saw the scorn. - Ralph Waldo Emerson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Complete Works of Thomas Carlyle: Past and Present; The Portraits of John Knox; Miscellanies So many hundred thousands sit in workhouses: and other hundred thousands have not yet got even workhouses; and in thrifty Scotland itself, in Glasgow or Edinburgh City, in their dark lanes, hidden from all but the eye of God, and of rare Bonevolence the minister of God, there are scenes of woe and destitution and desolation, such as, one may hope, the Sun never saw before in the most barbarous regions where men dwelt. Competent witnesses, the brave and humane Dr. Alison, who speaks what he knows, whose noble Healing Art in his charitable hands becomes once more a truly sacred one, report these things for us: these things are not of this year, or of last year, have no reference to our present state of commercial stagnation, but only to the common state. Not in sharp fever fits, but in chronic gangrene of this kind is Scotland suffering. A Poor-law, any and every Poor-law, it may be observed, is but a temporary measure; an anodyne, not a remedy: Rich and Poor, when once the naked facts of their condition have some into collision, cannot long subsist together on a mere Poor-law. True enough and yet, human beings cannot be left to die! Scotland too, till something better come, must have a Poor-law, if Scotland is not to be a by-word among the nations. Oh, what a waste is there; of noble and thrice-noble national virtues; peasant Stoicisms, Hemisms; valiant man ful habits, soul of a Nation's worth, which all the metal of Potosi cannot purchase back; to which the metal of Potosi, and all you can buy with it, is dross and dust!
