Long-term monitoring of nesting populations of six seabird and one shorebird species continued during the 1986 nesting season in Channel Islands National Park, California. Reproductive data were collected on resident Double-crested and Pelagic Cormorant, Snowy Plover, Western Gull, Xantus' Murrelet, Cassin's Auklet and the endangered California Brown Pelican. Monitoring activities were conducted on Anacapa, Santa Barbara, Sutil, San Miguel, and Prince islands. Double-crested Cormorants nested in normal numbers on Anacapa and Santa Barbara islands, although nesting effort and productivity on West Anacapa declined from the exceptionally successful 1985 season. California Brown Pelican nesting effort was the highest on record for Anacapa and Santa Barbara islands, but productivity was moderate due to early-season chick mortality and nest abandonment. Western Gulls nested in large numbers on Santa Barbara Island and productivity was moderate there and at Anacapa Island. Xantus' Murrelet reproductive success on Santa Barbara Island was high in 1986, exceeding average levels by 17%. Fifty artificial nest boxes for monitoring Cassin's Auklet nesting were installed at two sites on Prince Island; the 1986 occupancy rate was 36%. Snowy Plover numbers on San Miguel Island declined slightly from 1985.
