Book Description
Vienna has been the locale for nearly one hundred and fifty films and television productions in English, from 1920s through the first years of this century, with imaginative representations of Freud, Strauss, Franz Josef, Mozart, Beethoven, and Klimt; mad scientists, assassins, spies, refugees, romantics, and American professors; historical dramas, cartoons, documentaries, and Hitchcock's only musical comedy. The "City of Dreams" has appeared as an imperial court, a center of scientific and medical research, a Jewish and Catholic homeland, a locus of international espionage and domestic crime, the destination for innocents abroad, the birthplace of the waltz, a stage for performances and performers, and the site for romantic rendezvous. For many in English-language audiences, such productions have constituted the most significant representations of Vienna, a city that historically has been the capital of one of Europe's largest empires, one of the most important centers for classical music and opera, both a victim and an accomplice of Nazi Germany, and the home of international diplomacy. Cultural historians and Austrian writers have provided significant commentary on the city, but their influence has seldom reached such an extensive audience as the films and television productions screening Vienna for English-language audiences. Screening Vienna thus analyzes the representation of Vienna and the Viennese in English-language film and television, reviews the critical reception of these productions, and measures the representations against the cultural and historical contexts and the writings of contemporary Austrian writers. The book is unique in its scope (over one hundred and fifty productions from the 1920s to 2013) and in its inclusion of leading reviews of many films, references to cultural and historical studies of Vienna, and references to modern and contemporary Austrian fiction. Thus the analysis is more extensive in its coverage and more intensive in its analysis of each film than any previous study, with a focus on scene, language, plot, characterization, and the reception of these films. Scholars and students in American cultural studies, film studies, Austrian and Viennese history, and popular culture will find the book informative and essential for studies of Vienna in the American and British imagination. Given the extensive coverage and filmography, many libraries should also view the book as a reference work, in addition to its status in cultural and film studies. The book will also be useful for film studies and American popular culture studies courses at advanced or graduate level.

Book Description
During the 1930s, Austrian film production companies developed a process to navigate the competing demands of audiences in Nazi Germany and those found in broader Western markets. In Screening Transcendence, film historian Robert Dassanowsky explores how Austrian filmmakers during the Austrofascist period (1933–1938) developed two overlapping industries: "Aryanized" films for distribution in Germany, its largest market, and "Emigrantenfilm," which employed émigré and Jewish talent that appealed to international audiences. Through detailed archival research in both Vienna and the United States, Dassanowsky reveals what was culturally, socially, and politically at stake in these two simultaneous and overlapping film industries. Influenced by French auteurism, admired by Italian cinephiles, and ardently remade by Hollywood, these period Austrian films demonstrate a distinctive regional style mixed with transnational influences. Combining brilliant close readings of individual films with thoroughly informed historical and cultural observations, Dassanowsky presents the story of a nation and an industry mired in politics, power, and intrigue on the brink of Nazi occupation.

Book Description
In September 1996, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), prohibiting nuclear explosions worldwide, in all environments. The treaty calls for a global verification system, including a network of 321 monitoring stations distributed around the globe, a data communications network, an international data center, and onsite inspections, to verify compliance. The problem of identifying small-magnitude banned nuclear tests and discriminating between such tests and the background of earthquakes and mining-related seismic events, is a challenging research problem. Because they emphasize CTBT verification research, the 12 papers in this special volume primarily addresses regional data recorded by a variety of arrays, broadband stations, and temporarily deployed stations. Nuclear explosions, earthquakes, mining-related explosions, mine collapses, single-charge and ripple-fired chemical explosions from Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America are all studied. While the primary emphasis is on short-period, body-wave discriminants and associated source and path corrections, research that focuses on long-period data recorded at regional and teleseismic distances is also presented Hence, these papers demonstrate how event identification research in support of CTBT monitoring has expanded in recent years to include a wide variety of event types, data types, geographic regions and statistical techniques.

Book Description
For more than two decades, the artist Renée Green has created an impressive body of work in which language is an essential element. Green is also a prolific writer and a major voice in the international art world. Other Planes of There gathers for the first time a substantial collection of the work she wrote between 1981 and 2010. The selected essays initially appeared in publications in different countries and languages, making their availability in this volume a boon to those wanting to follow Green's artistic and intellectual trajectory. Charting this cosmopolitan artist’s thinking through the decades, Other Planes of There brings essays, film scripts, reviews, and polemics together with reflections on Green's own artistic practice and seminal artworks. It immerses the reader in three decades of contemporary art showcasing the art and thought, the incisive critiques and prescient observations of one of our foremost artists and intellectuals. Sound, cinema, literature, time-based media, and the relationship between art forms and other forms of knowledge are just a few of the matters that Green takes up and thinks through. Sixty-four pages of color plates were selected by the artist for this lavishly illustrated volume.

Book Description
This is a pioneering book on Taiwan's cultural diplomacy. It argues that cultural diplomacy is a subset of public diplomacy aiming to utilize useful cultural resources to demonstrate Taiwan's soft power so to increase the public's understanding and create positive impression toward Taiwan in the like-minded countries. It then identifies three effective areas to implement cultural diplomacy: films, music, and the academic field of Taiwan studies. Dr. Astrid Lipinsky is Managing Director of the Vienna Center for Taiwan Studies at University of Vienna, Austria. Professor Hsin-Huang Michael Hsiao is Chairman of Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation, Taiwan.
