Book Description
This book constitutes the strictly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Languages, Compilers, and Run-Time Systems for Scalable Computing, LCR '98, held in Pittsburgh, PA, USA in May 1998. The 23 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from a total of 47 submissions; also included are nine refereed short papers. All current issues of developing software systems for parallel and distributed computers are covered, in particular irregular applications, automatic parallelization, run-time parallelization, load balancing, message-passing systems, parallelizing compilers, shared memory systems, client server applications, etc.

Book Description
Load Balancing in Parallel Computers: Theory and Practice is about the essential software technique of load balancing in distributed memory message-passing parallel computers, also called multicomputers. Each processor has its own address space and has to communicate with other processors by message passing. In general, a direct, point-to-point interconnection network is used for the communications. Many commercial parallel computers are of this class, including the Intel Paragon, the Thinking Machine CM-5, and the IBM SP2. Load Balancing in Parallel Computers: Theory and Practice presents a comprehensive treatment of the subject using rigorous mathematical analyses and practical implementations. The focus is on nearest-neighbor load balancing methods in which every processor at every step is restricted to balancing its workload with its direct neighbours only. Nearest-neighbor methods are iterative in nature because a global balanced state can be reached through processors' successive local operations. Since nearest-neighbor methods have a relatively relaxed requirement for the spread of local load information across the system, they are flexible in terms of allowing one to control the balancing quality, effective for preserving communication locality, and can be easily scaled in parallel computers with a direct communication network. Load Balancing in Parallel Computers: Theory and Practice serves as an excellent reference source and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the subject.

Book Description
This book contains four review articles in the area of scalable computing. Two of the articles discuss methods and tools for the parallel solution of irregular problems, which have been satisfactorily worked out in heterogeneous systems. One surveys the technology and applications of multimedia server clusters, which are playing an increasing role in the current networked environment. An additional article discusses SilkRoad, which adds distributed shared memory capabilities to the Cilk parallel programming system. Once again, the book represents a new set of steps forward in parallel systems.

This two volume set LNCS 8285 and 8286 constitutes the proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Algorithms and Architectures for Parallel Processing, ICA3PP 2013, held in Vietri sul Mare, Italy in December 2013. The first volume contains 10 distinguished and 31 regular papers selected from 90 submissions and covering topics such as big data, multi-core programming and software tools, distributed scheduling and load balancing, high-performance scientific computing, parallel algorithms, parallel architectures, scalable and distributed databases, dependability in distributed and parallel systems, wireless and mobile computing. The second volume consists of four sections including 35 papers from one symposium and three workshops held in conjunction with ICA3PP 2013 main conference. These are 13 papers from the 2013 International Symposium on Advances of Distributed and Parallel Computing (ADPC 2013), 5 papers of the International Workshop on Big Data Computing (BDC 2013), 10 papers of the International Workshop on Trusted Information in Big Data (TIBiDa 2013) as well as 7 papers belonging to Workshop on Cloud-assisted Smart Cyber-Physical Systems (C-Smart CPS 2013).

Book Description
Implementations of climate models on scalable parallel computer systems can suffer from load imbalances resulting from temporal and spatial variations in the amount of computation required for physical parameterizations such as solar radiation and convective adjustment. We have developed specialized techniques for correcting such imbalances. These techniques are incorporated in a general-purpose, programmable load-balancing library that allows the mapping of computation to processors to be specified as a series of maps generated by a programmer-supplied load-balancing module. The communication required to move from one map to another is performed automatically by the library, without programmer intervention. In this paper, we describe the load-balancing problem and the techniques that we have developed to solve it. We also describe specific load-balancing algorithms that we have developed for PCCM2, a scalable parallel implementation of the Community Climate Model, and present experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of these algorithms on parallel computers. The load-balancing library developed in this work is available for use in other climate models.

Book Description
A distributed system consists of many heterogeneous processors with different processing power and all processors are interconnected with a communication channel. In such a system, if some processors are less loaded or idle and others are heavily loaded, the system performance will be reduced drastically. System performance can be improved by using proper load balancing [1, 4]. The aim of load balancing is to improve the performance measures and reduce the overall completion time and cost
