Book Description
Salta Province, which lies astride the Tropic of Capricorn in extreme northwest Argentina, encompasses many of South America's major habitats: montane moist forest, thorn forest, lowland desert, highland desert, and deciduous forests. As a result, the area supports a wealth of mammal species and is of great biogeographic interest. This bilingual guide is the first to survey the mammal fauna of a major region of South America, the continent that has the richest array of plant and animal life on earth. The Guide includes information on the natural history, taxonomy, and behavior of all 114 species known to occur in the province, of which many species have been very poorly studied. A key to the families of mammals, depictions of the species, distribution maps, and cranial drawings assist in identification. General information on Salta and its habitats also is provided, as is a discussion of the methods of mammal research.

Book Description
This study of three Argentine provincial capitals introduces a new concept in Latin American urban studies: the historical role of secondary cities, settlements large enough to possess all the elements commonly associated with urban areas and yet too small to figure among a country's major cities. The principal contribution of the book is to explain how and why smaller cities grew. What determined and shaped their growth? How did local inhabitants, and especially the dominant social elites, react to internal and external influences? To what extent were they able to control growth? What relationships developed with the surrounding regions and the outside world? The study shows that secondary cities linked rural economies and inhabitants with the outside world while insulating the traditional rural environment from the changing character of large urban centers. In this intermediate position, economic relationships and social structure changed slowly, and only in response to outside innovations such as railroads. Continuity within the secondary centers thus reinforced conservatism, accentuated the gap between the major cities and the rest of the country, and contributed to the resistance to change that characterizes much of Latin American today. The book is illustrated with photographs and maps.

Book Description
I invite you now to know a very special place. Salta, a city in northwestern Argentina that has a unique history, marked by culture, cuisine, natural beauties and a past of war for the independence of the country in the nineteenth century. To know the landscapes of the "Quebradas", to see the colors of the earth, the vegetation of the Puna and the mountains, there are no words to describe them. The colors of the photos can give us an idea of what these landscapes imprint on our soul when we visit. In addition to Salta, in the nearby cities we also find a nature that marks us with its particularities: Purmamarca, Cafayate, Salinas Grandes and San Antonio de los Cobres. I hope the next pages fill your eyes with the color of Salta and its surroundings.
