Women, Livestock Ownership and Markets
Author: Jemimah Njuki
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136186212
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 169
Book Description
This book provides empirical evidence from Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique and from different production systems of the importance of livestock as an asset to women and their participation in livestock and livestock product markets. It explores the issues of intra-household income management and economic benefits of livestock markets to women, focusing on how types of markets, the types of products and women’s participation in markets influence their access to livestock income. The book further analyses the role of livestock ownership, especially women’s ownership of livestock, in influencing household food security though increasing household dietary diversity and food adequacy. Additional issues addressed include access to resources, information and financial services to enable women more effectively to participate in livestock production and marketing, and some of the factors that influence this access. Practical strategies for increasing women’s market participation and access to information and services are discussed. The book ends with recommendations on how to mainstream gender in livestock research and development if livestock are to serve as a pathway out of poverty for the poor and especially for women.

The World Association for Animal Production produces this book that is a reference tool for the animal scientific community and for policy makers worldwide. Sixty authors from the six continents contributed with thirty outstanding manuscripts. This volume is the first of a series that will be produced every year. The objective of this project is to establish a reference volume for livestock system and research development, for the use of international organizations, research institutes, policy makers and animal industries, worldwide. This book is particularly interesting for those wanting to get a deeper knowledge on the ""state of the art"" of livestock systems in the six continents. This aspect is illustrated in the first section of the volume, while the second section describes the development of research activities in nineteen specific fields of animal science. Furthermore, the readers will certainly be interested by reading the ""contemporary issues"" manuscripts belonging to the third section. The articles of this section were selected to accomplish the most ""urgent"" topics in animal industry. The volume is also completed with relevant statistics, furnishing information and data in a homogenous and easy to read structure. The changes that have happened in animal industries in the last decades are clearly illustrated in tables and graphics. These data, together with the interpretation of the articles of the previous sections, will render easier the prediction of future scenarios. Dairy's impact on reducing global hunger
Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9251321132
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 62
Book Description
In 2015, the 193 Member States of the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to guide development actions of governments, international agencies, civil society and other institutions over the next 15 years (2016–2030). The SDGs aim to end poverty (SDG1) and hunger (SDG2) while restoring and sustainably managing natural resources. The number of people in the world suffering from hunger increased in 2014–2017, reversing the declining trend in undernourishment seen since 2005. In light of the renewed international commitment to reduce hunger, the potential of dairy development to contribute to poverty reduction and the potential of dairy nutrition in young children, the aim of this study is to collate and review available evidence for a causal relationship between: (i) milk / dairy consumption and (ii) ownership of dairy animals and reduced levels of child undernutrition (HAZ, stunting and WAZ, underweight) in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs).
