Book Description
Mary Baker Eddy. Speaking for herself offers an unprecedented look at the woman hailed in 1907 as "...the most famous, interesting, and powerful woman in America, if not the world" (Human Life magazine). First in a series of books featuring her previously unpublished writings, this is a volume where Eddy's voice is heard as never before. Mary Baker Eddy's accomplishments as a healer. author, publisher, and founder of an international newspaper and a worldwide movement are extraordinary when viewed in light of her nineteenth-century surroundings. Jana K. Riess, Religion Book Review Editor for Publishers Weekly, notes that Eddy "...persistently enlarged the boundaries of spirituality, womanhood, and medicine more than a century ago. She was a unique, strong, and visionary leader, a product of the nineteenth century who looked into the future and claimed its progress." Dr. Riess's insightful introduction looks at the societal context in which Eddy lived and made her lasting legacy. As the current interest in spirituality continues to rise, Eddy's bold concepts about spirituality, health, and womanhood are more relevant than ever. In the words of Dr. Riess, "Her personal story could be any of ours, and it inspires us to transcend our circumstances as she did." Book jacket.

Book Description
The volume includes Mark Twain's previously published philosophical writing. Fictional pieces (even some which develop arguments contained here) are ordinarily excluded, as are other works appropriate to different volumes in this edition. However, "Letter from the Recording Angel," "The Five Boons of Life," and "Letters from the Earth," although they are in a strict sense fictional, have been judged more relevant to the present volume that to the volumes of short fiction. "Things a Scotsman Wants to Know," previously unpublished, is included by agreement with the editor of The Mark Twain Papers, as being especially relevant to themes of this volume. Other unpublished items appear as supplements because of their close relation to What Is Man?, Christian Science, and " 'The Turning Point of My Life.' " The two works that break off with unfinished sentences, "Bible Teaching and Religious Practice" and the introductory section of "Letters from the Earth," were abandoned by the author or else their endings have been lost. The order of works in this volume is according to date of publication or, for those unpublished during the author's lifetime, date of composition. For works published during his lifetime, dates of first publication appear in roman type below titles; for works first published after his death, date are in italics and indicate time of composition.

Book Description
What role does a mother play in raising thoughtful, generous children? In her literary debut, internationally award-winning writer Courtney Zoffness considers what we inherit from generations past--biologically, culturally, spiritually--and what we pass on to our children. Spilt Milk is an intimate, bracing, and beautiful exploration of vulnerability and culpability. Zoffness relives her childhood anxiety disorder as she witnesses it manifest in her firstborn; endures brazen sexual advances by a student in her class; grapples with the implications of her young son's cop obsession; and challenges her Jewish faith. Where is the line between privacy and secrecy? How do the stories we tell inform who we become? These powerful, dynamic essays herald a vital new voice.

Book Description
How much do we know about what makes people thrive and societies flourish? While a vast body of research has been dedicated to understanding problems and disorders, we know remarkably little about the positive aspects of life, the things that make life worth living. This landmark volume heralds the emergence of a new field of science that endeavours to understand how individuals and societies thrive and flourish, and how this new knowledge can be applied to foster happiness, health and fulfillment, and institutions that encourage the development of these qualities. Taking a dynamic, cross-disciplinary approach, it sets out to explore the most promising routes to well-being, derived from the latest research in psychology, neuroscience, social science, economics and the effects of our natural environment. Designed for a general readership, this volume is of compelling interest to all those in the social, behavioural and biomedical sciences, the caring professions and policy makers. It provides a stimulating overview for any reader with a serious interest in the latest insights and strategies for enhancing our individual well-being, or the well-being of the communities in which we live and work.
