Abstract: "Reproductive health care services in Bangladesh are inadequate to say the least. Rural women have little or no access to health care services and remain reluctant to consult a doctor due to lack of encouragement from family members and their tendency to rely heavily on traditional healer’s medicine. As a result, the maternal mortality rate is 240 deaths per 100,000 live births in Bangladesh (UNICEF, 2012). Despite the acknowledgement of high rate of mortality by the government and non-government organizations (NGOs), there is inadequate research in regard to the causes such as beliefs and attitudes towards reproductive health among Bangladeshi women. This study examined two research questions. The first research question of the study is what are the beliefs and attitudes of rural Bangladeshi women towards reproductive health? The second research question of the study is how these beliefs do and attitudes shape rural women’s understanding and their subsequent decisions about their reproductive health and the services that are available? "

The Community-operated Reproductive Health Project (CORHP) is a family planning program in rural Dhaka, Bangladesh. Contrary to focusing on fertility rates, a characteristic of the household contraceptives delivery and family planning advice characteristic of previous family planning programs in Bangladesh, CORHP is a site-based project that emphasizes the comprehensive, rights-based approach rather than fertility reduction. The paper evaluates the effectiveness of CORHP in improving reproductive health. The regression results show that CORHP is more effective in delivering services pertaining to reproductive health, but less so in building awareness. The results also suggest that facilities such as CORHP are adequate substitutes for the household delivery system.

It will also critically explore the actual fact in Bangladesh, how maternal health is influenced by their health behaviour based on social, cultural and religious framework. Moreover, it will also highlight governmental strategy for improving maternal health which will be an outstanding achievement of the “Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5” in Bangladesh. Maternal health is the prime concern of public health in Bangladesh. After that, Bangladesh is highly motivated to achieve its “Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5” for improving maternal health and reducing the maternal mortality rate by 75% between the period of 1990 and 2015. Bangladesh’s government is promoting a safe maternity practice and reducing maternal mortality. Already, the government has been expanded and has promoted existing health services, implementing them with a new policy and services performing EOC (essential obstetric care), accessible to all women particularly pregnant mothers and adolescents. Moreover, Bangladesh is a highly populated developing country in the world with a maternal mortality ratio of 170/100,000 live births. Particularly, prenatal and postnatal care is very poor in Bangladesh because of malnutrition. It is stated that in Bangladesh the maternal mortality and morbidity rate is the second highest in the world. There are several influential factors, for instance: indigenous health behaviour and traditional lifestyle which are remarkably based on social, cultural and religious belief. In Bangladesh, around 20,000 mothers are dying each year during their pregnancy, while 69% are from obstetric causes, 14% are as a result of injury and violence and the rest due to indirect deaths.

This paper evaluates the impact of a reproductive health program on the nutritional status of children under the age of ten in rural Bangladesh. The program was administered in a treatment area while retaining an equally impoverished area as control through a doorstep delivery, allowing us to estimate treatment effects without problems of endogenous program placement and self-selected participation. A reduced form demand approach has been applied using Matlab Health and Socio-economic Survey of 1996 to estimate program effects, returns to mother's education, the joint effect of the program and household characteristics as well as gender differences in nutritional outcomes. Results indicate that the program significantly improves the health of boys and girls in the treatment area. Mother's education has a positive impact on child health, more so for girls than boys. The program is a substitute for maternal education in improving boys' health while a complement to household wealth in improving girls' nutritional status.
