Book Description
The rise of Jewish feminism, a branch of both second-wave feminism and the American counterculture, in the late 1960s had an extraordinary impact on the leadership, practice, and beliefs of American Jews. Women Remaking American Judaism is the first book to fully examine the changes in American Judaism as women fought to practice their religion fully and to ensure that its rituals, texts, and liturgies reflected their lives. In addition to identifying the changes that took place, this volume aims to understand the process of change in ritual, theology, and clergy across the denominations. The essays in Women Remaking American Judaism offer a paradoxical understanding of Jewish feminism as both radical, in the transformational sense, and accomodationist, in the sense that it was thoroughly compatible with liberal Judaism. Essays in the first section, Reenvisioning Judaism, investigate the feminist challenges to traditional understanding of Jewish law, texts, and theology. In Redefining Judaism, the second section, contributors recognize that the changes in American Judaism were ultimately put into place by each denomination, their law committees, seminaries, rabbinic courts, rabbis, and synagogues, and examine the distinct evolution of women’s issues in the Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist movements. Finally, in the third section, Re-Framing Judaism, essays address feminist innovations that, in some cases, took place outside of the synagogue. An introduction by Riv-Ellen Prell situates the essays in both American and modern Jewish history and offers an analysis of why Jewish feminism was revolutionary. Women Remaking American Judaism raises provocative questions about the changes to Judaism following the feminist movement, at every turn asking what change means in Judaism and other American religions and how the fight for equality between men and women parallels and differs from other changes in Judaism. Women Remaking American Judaism will be of interest to both scholars of Jewish history and women’s studies.

Book Description
Excerpt from Reconstructing America Intimately associated with questions of government reach are vital issues of finance, of administration, of credits, of possible deficits to increase the burden of taxation, and the invasion of private rights of vested interest in privately established businesses - whether the small retailer or the holder of public franchises. These are reconstruction questions that concern at least the temporary period of readjustment through which we must pass in the coming two or three years. Book Description
Excerpt from The Liberties of America And here, if nowhere else, I trust I have a door of entrance for the reader's thanks. Such a subject ought not surely to lie waste. It should be thoroughly discussed. There ought to be a literature of freedom, accessible to everybody, and suited if possible to every body's wants. To which end, mine is a pioneer effort. I have had no predecessor to instruct me either by success or failure in a similar enterprise. Let me be judged accordingly. I have done as well as I could. And though my handling of the matter discussed should fail to please the public, they will yet allow me the solace of believing that I have done my country some small service by being the first to handle it at all since it is better the people should be led, by any guidance, to think upon what so nearly concerns them, than to go on talking, as the fashion is, without thinking. Book Description
Excerpt from Reconstruction in America This juncture brings up afresh, debate upon the structure of the American system of Government; and the occasion for the appearance of this pamphlet, is the belief that we have reached the point of constitutional settlement, whether we are a Nation or a mere pact between Sovereign States. The proposed Reconstruction of the States will necessarily unsettle the nature of the Government, both theoretically and practically. So believing, the policy of Restoration, rather than that of Reconstruction, finds advocacy in these pages. Excerpt from Dry America I for one do not believe she will, in which faith I am putting forth this little book; also with the hope that it may contribute something toward the reaction against Prohibition and Puritanism Of which the signs multiply about us every day. To believe that Prohibition will stand is, in my View, to believe that the Republic has lost her way and is without the guiding light of her nob lest traditions.
