Book Description
This study looks at how the Army has handled long-term care for combat casualties. Policy and practice have changed over time due to 1) the availability and capability of other government hospitals to care for patients, 2) changing political climates, 3) expanding GME programs that need complex patients, 4) the developments of medical science, and 5) the economics of medical practice. The AMEDD has different levels of care and rehabilitation for different patient populations, including varying levels for combat casualties. As the AMEDD looks at its structure of personnel and facilities for the future, it should consider the experience of the past. Doing nothing for the wounded is not an option, doing everything for the wounded is not practical, so the question for contemplation and debate is how much should be done and by whom.

Book Description
Excerpt from Rehabilitation of the Wounded Rehabilitation of soldiers necessarily includes the replacement in civilian life of the uninjured men who will return after the war from service, on shore and afloat, as fast as the ships of the world can carry them. But the term rehabilitation should be used in a broader sense; rehabilitation includes not only sailors and soldiers but the whole community. It is so, for Our sailors and soldiers are citizens. Since they are citizens, their rehabilitation 1s a matter of such wide extent that it can leave no phase of social organization untouched. In Great Britain, a Department of Reconstruction with wide connections and wide powers exists to study questions such as these. In Canada, the same thing is done by a committee of the Cabinet. Book Description
"Injury is a public health problem whose toll is unacceptable," claims this book from the Committee on Trauma Research. Although injuries kill more Americans from 1 to 34 years old than all diseases combined, little is spent on prevention and treatment research. In addition, between $75 billion and $100 billion each year is spent on injury-related health costs. Not only does the book provide a comprehensive survey of what is known about injuries, it suggests there is a vast need to know more. Injury in America traces findings on the epidemiology of injuries, prevention of injuries, injury biomechanics and the prevention of impact injury, treatment, rehabilitation, and administration of injury research.
