The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

After 40 years of activists working to reduce sexual violence on college campuses, in 2014, the new Campus Anti-Rape Movement (CARM) finally put this issue on the national policy agenda. President Barack Obama credited “an inspiring wave of student-led activism” for catapulting campus rape into public consciousness. This book positions the new CARM within a long history of anti-sexual violence activism in the U.S. The authors describe the major events of this new movement and how it coalesced. The authors also analyze the new CARM through a social movement lens, and examine the role of new laws and social media in facilitating movement successes. The book argues that the new CARM laid the groundwork for the emergence of #MeToo, the highest profile campaign against sexual harassment/violence to date in U.S. history.

Following on from a NAO report (HCP 300, session 2002-03; ISBN 0102920303), the Committee's report examines the extent to which commercial use has been made of the agricultural research and development commissioned by the Government. Over the last ten years, about £100 million a year has been spent in funding for a range of research establishments. Conclusions drawn include: 1) income from commercialisation is less than one per cent of DEFRA's expenditure on research, suggesting that it lacks the leadership and enthusiasm to promote commercialisation. Expected outcomes need to be specified and trends monitored to help identify opportunities for exploitation of research; 2) research establishments need to develop management strategies to maximise commercial opportunities and get advice on negotiating skills in order to effectively exploit intellectual property, and should report annually to DEFRA on their success; and 3) the need for DEFRA to establish explicit risk management strategies to balance effective commercial exploitation with public policy objectives, and to maintain full transparency in its dealings with the private sector.
