Socialists and International Actions for Peace 1914–1923
Author: Masao Nishikawa
Publisher: Frank & Timme GmbH
ISBN: 3865962963
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 344
Book Description
The analyses and accounts of the history of the "Second International" often go up to 1914, the year its anti-war efforts were to prove futile. All actions of the socialists during World War I were discussed in the context of the pathway to the "Third International." The author aims to present a somewhat different picture from existing views by examining the thoughts and actions of socialists in the years 1914-1923 beyond the framework of whether they supported or opposed the "Third International." He describes what circumstances led to the formation of "communism" and "social democracy," which divided in two the international socialist movement for almost 70 years, paying attention to various issues deeply involved in international and domestic politics as well as in the socialist movement. Masao Nishikawa taught western history at the Tokyo Women's Christian College (1966-1968), the University of Tokyo (1968-1994) and Senshū University (1994-2004). He was visiting professor at Ruhr University Bochum (1976-1977) and Bremen University (1988-1989). Upon retirement he was made professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo. He had a worldwide fame as a specialist of international socialist movements.

Demonstration Culture
Author: Kevin J. Callahan
Publisher: Troubador Publishing Ltd
ISBN: 1848763832
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 359
Book Description
The movement of international socialism prior to World War I overcame internal disunity and external obstacles by developing a new style of political culture and communication centered on mass-based demonstration. This culture consisted of a diverse repertoire of activities such as public display, political symbolism, the popular press, the issuance of manifestos, massive antiwar rallies, and the convening of impressive political spectacles. As the largest international movement of its era, international socialism articulated a powerful indictment against the European imperialist and militaristic order. Claiming to represent all of humanity and to reconcile national and international identity, international socialism facilitated the expression of political dissent, the expansion of democratic citizenship and the spread of innovative techniques we now consider an essential part of modern political communication and culture. This interdisciplinary book touches upon several fields of scholarship including European Socialism; political communication; social movement; peace studies and World War I.

Internationalism Toward Diplomatic Crisis
Author: Elisa Marcobelli
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030740846
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
This book analyzes how the Second International reacted to international diplomatic crises and what was the attitude of French, German and Italian socialists between 1889 and 1915, the year in which Italy entered the World War. This book shows that the Second International became over the years more and more involved in the fight against war and learnt to respond to situations of diplomatic crisis. An example of this is the fact that its last congress before the outbreak of the First World War, the Basel Congress of 1912, was nothing less than a great international socialist demonstration of opposition to war. However, the fact that France, Germany or Italy were involved in a diplomatic crisis hindered the International's ability to respond effectively to it. For all these factors, the attitude of the International is very different from one crisis to another.
