Book Description
Excerpt from Rambles and Reveries of a Naturalist His little volume of Natural History sketches has very little to do with opinions or speculations. The aim of the writer has been to describe the facts and phenomena of Nature as they have appeared to present themselves to his own observation. They are life-pictures rather than compilations. So far as systematic arrangement is concerned, there has certainly been an effort to treat each subject taken up in such a way as to lay at least a stepping-stone on the path to a more serious contemplation of the sciences of the text-book and the laboratory, but the primary intention of the author has been rather to awaken or to stimulate a love for Nature in the minds of some who may not as yet have suspected what wondrous and ever-varying beauty lies everywhere about us in ditch and pond, in rock and stone, in river and sea, on earth and in the skies. The same objects have been described by other and abler pens, but facts and laws present them selves in different aspects to different minds, and the ceaseless and diversified operations of Nature cannot be too frequently portrayed. Even those who would not care to claim the character of students of Nature are not unwilling to be considered lovers of Nature, and for such the plain and non-technical descriptions of a few of her secrets, by those who tell the story of what they themselves have seen and felt in her presence, cannot fail to possess some degree of interest. Book Description
Excerpt from A Naturalist's Rambles About Home I have in but very few cases endeavored to follow any ani mal from the cradle to the grave but my aim has been rather to record my impressions of such as I saw, as I saw them and never have I started out with the intention of making every creature I found conform to the rules laid down for its conduct by those who assume to know more about animals than these know about themselves. Book Description
Excerpt from Half Hours With a Naturalist: Rambles Near the Shore Now, however, all these minute beings have been proved to belong to the Simplest forms of vegetable life, and the Locomotive Theory had to be abandoned. Among the beings which occupy the border-land be tween the animal and vegetable kingdoms, the sponges have of late years started into prominence. Relegated at first to the vegetable, but now conclusively proved to belong to the animal kingdom, the sponges are full of interest to the student of zoology. With the sponge of commerce we are all familiar enough, and it is scarcely necessary to state that it con Sists of the horny Skeleton alone, the whole of the organic matter having been removed. This organic matter is apparently nothing but a mere wash or film of gelatinous substance covering every filament of the Skeleton but when carefully examined it presents a most remarkable mixture of simplicity and complica tion. Without entering into the purely scientific details Of sponge-structure, I will endeavour to lay open some of the wonders which are hidden in one of the lowest forms of animal life. Book Description
Excerpt from Country Rambles: Being a Field Naturalist's and Country Lover's Note Book for a Year This volume consists Of notes on Natural History written in a plain and unvarnished style, and placed under the dates when they occurred, or general information which came under my notice during the closing year Of the Nineteenth Century. There are some entries which may appear trifling, but a true Observer Of Nature should not fail to set on record anything occurring in the Natural History world, as in the future that apparently un important note may be the connecting link which goes to complete a chain of some importance. There are many entries of Birds, Mammals, Butterflies, Insects, Fishes, Trees, Flowers, etc., which may be looked for at certain stated times in any year; thus this Diary will also serve as a Natural History Calendar. For the most part my notes refer to the sights and sounds seen and heard during the year in quiet, homely Hertfordshire, and these together with the other features introduced from time to time, will, it is hoped, be acceptable to those to Whom such a volume appeals, and if it imbues any indifferent observers with a love for Natural History, especially that Of our own Country, it will nor have been written in vain. Book Description
Excerpt from The Note-Book of a Naturalist The consequences of this pursuit, when not even carried to the length of a study, are self-evident, and the day has happily passed away in which the vota ries of nature were taunted with ridicule, and as addicted to childish fancies. There is a kind of freemasonry in the study or pursuit of. Natural History it Operates on our kindly affections, and in many instances opens the communication to the most pleasing acquaintances, which, from congeniality of disposition, ripen into the warmest friendships. Our walks cease to be solitary, something there is always to observe, something to note down, to verify, or compare. The effect on the mind, too, is not one of. Book Description
Excerpt from The Hermit Naturalist On a frosty morning in the autumn of '93, when I was laboriously rowing against the strong current of the Delaware, above tide. Water, in search of a specimen of wild fowl for my cabinet, I saw the old hermit, sitting likea statue in his anchored boat. His shotgun rested on his knees, and he was evidently awaiting a shot at the wild-fowl that occasion ally y over at this season of the year. Aux ious to secure a nearer view of my hermit friend, I rowed towards him in such a manner as not to arouse his suspicions of my curiosity inspired purpose. I rowed but a short distance when I observed a fine ock of wild ducks y over me. At once I turned my attention to the lone sportsman. He also saw the game and was standing easily in his boat and taking care ful aim. As the ock passed directly over him he fired, when to my surprise and horror, he lost his balance, dropped his gun and madly grasped at the side of his boat as he went over board and disappeared from my anxious gaze, in the swiftly rushing current. Believing the current would carry him far below his anchored boat, I pulled with all my strength to intercept him as he came down stream. Soon his head appeared above the surface of the water, a hun dred yards or so from me. Increasing my efforts I soon rested in his way as the swift current swept him toward me, and I called to him to seize hold of my boat. He was an ex pert swimmer and soon grasped the stern of my boat, when I shipped my oars, and helped him aboard, chilled from the effects of his untimely bath. When safely seated in my boat, and having recovered his breath after his exhausting efforts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
