Book Description
In a world ever more congested and polluted with both toxins and noise, award-winning photographer Pete McBride takes readers on a once-in-a-lifetime escape to find places of peace and quiet—a pole-to-pole, continent-by-continent quest for the soul. We tend to think of silence as the absence of sound, but it is actually the void where we can hear the sublime notes of nature. In this National Outdoor Book Award winning work, photographer Pete McBride reveals the wonders of these hushed places in spectacular imagery—from the thin-air flanks of Mount Everest to the depths of the Grand Canyon, from the high-altitude vistas of the Atacama to the African savannah, and from the Antarctic Peninsula to the flowing waters of the Ganges and Nile. These places remind us of the magic of being “truly away” and how such places are vanishing. Often showing beauty from vantages where no other photographer has ever stood, this is a seven-continent visual tour of global quietude—and the power in nature’s own sounds—that will both inspire and calm.

Book Description
Silent Beauty Speaks is a collection of poems inspired by nature, both within and without. It is the author's interpretation of life and its workings. To the poet, life is more than just the mechanics of biology or the change and course of every season. Life is a rhythmic harmony of language that flows from the speechless mouths of all things living: the power of the rising sun, the mystery of the midnight moon, the allure of the forest, the crashing of the raging seas--all these things inspire thought and reason to combine into a melody of words that flows from the stream of consciousness into the rhyme and rhythm of a song that rises from the depths of the heart! To some, poetry may seem pointless. But to the poet, it is a way of transmitting her longing, expressing her vision, creating beauty with glowing script and breathy language. Some poems are wistful. Others are hard and thoughtful. Whatever the difference, each submits a vision and a longing that the author wishes to convey to her audience. Her poems are not meant to be obscure but are, rather, journeys leading to clearer vision and brighter perspectives. Some poems are mere reflections of life in the present moment, like the beauty of the sun as it sets behind an earthy veil or the quiet peace of midnight as it shadows the sky with the velvet cloak of darkness. Other poems are reflections of faith: the sorrows of life in darkness, the sufferings of humanity, and its need for salvation. Whatever the topic, the author hopes to convey her peace, her longing for creation, and her hope in the promises she believes in and seeks to share them with others. Silent Beauty Speaks is the author's loving work and inspiration of life and all its meanings. 56

Book Description
The present volume endeavors to make a contribution to contemporary Whitehead studies by clarifying his axiological process metaphysics, including his theory of values, concept of aesthetic experience, and doctrine of beauty, along with his philosophy of art, literature and poetry. Moreover, it establishes an east-west dialogue focusing on how Alfred North Whitehead’s process aesthetics can be clarified by the traditional Japanese Buddhist sense of evanescent beauty. As this east-west dialogue unfolds it is shown that there are many striking points of convergence between Whitehead’s process aesthetics and the traditional Japanese sense of beauty. However, the work especially focuses on two of Whitehead’s aesthetic categories, including the penumbral beauty of darkness and the tragic beauty of perishability, while further demonstrating parallels with the two Japanese aesthetic categories of yûgen and aware. It is clarified how both Whitehead and the Japanese tradition have articulated a poetics of evanescence that celebrates the transience of aesthetic experience and the ephemerality of beauty. Finally it is argued that both Whitehead and Japanese tradition develop an aesthetics of beauty as perishability culminating in a religio-aesthetic vision of tragic beauty and its reconciliation in the supreme ecstasy of peace or nirvana.

Book Description
These seven essays offer fresh perspectives on beauty’s role in revelation. Each essay features a hermeneutical approach informed by the contemporary study of aesthetics. Covering a series of texts in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, from Adam and Eve in the garden to Jesus on trial in the Fourth Gospel, the authors engage beauty from three overarching perspectives: modern philosophy, contextual criticism, and the postcritical return to beauty’s primary qualities. The three perspectives are not harmonized but rather explored concurrently to create a volume with intriguing methodological tensions. As this collection highlights beauty in the narratives of scripture, it opens readers to a largely unexplored dimension of the Bible. The contributors are Richard J. Bautch, Jo-Ann A. Brant, Mark Brummitt, David Penchansky, Antonio Portalatín, Jean-François Racine, and Peter Spitaler.
