Notre réalité tout entière est devenue cosmopolitique. Il suffit pour s'en convaincre de citer le dernier avatar en date des risques planétaires : la menace terroriste, qui est sans frontières. Les protestations soulevées par la guerre en Irak en constituent également une illustration éclairante. La résistance, particulièrement la résistance à la mondialisation, entraîne en même temps une mondialisation politique. Pour chaque nouveau risque global, le choc produit fait surgir des opinions publiques d'envergure mondiale. Par là même, le cosmopolitisme a cessé d'être une simple idée d'avenir controversée. Adopter une " optique cosmopolitique " constitue donc la condition nécessaire à une reconstruction conceptuelle de la perception. Cette optique suppose une sensibilité au monde, à un monde sans frontières, c'est-à-dire un regard quotidien, historiquement vrai, réflexif, apte à percevoir des ambivalences au milieu de distinctions qui s'évanouissent et de contradictions culturelles. Un regard qui ne pointe pas seulement la " déchirure ", mais aussi la possibilité de créer notre propre vie, et notre façon à tous de vivre ensemble dans une situation de mélange culturel. Un regard capable d'être en même temps sceptique, sans illusions, auto-critique. Pour survivre, nous avons besoin de ce nouveau réalisme cosmopolitique.
