Excerpt from The Biology of the Protozoa While the single protozoon is to be compared structurally with a single isolated unit tissue cell of a metazoon as a bit of protoplasm differentiated into cell body, or cytoplasm, and nucleus, it is a very different unit physiologically. In its Vital activities it should be compared, not with the unit tissue cell, but with the entire organism of which the tissue cell is a part. All animal organisms perform the same fundamental vital activities of nutrition, excretion, irri tability with movement and reproduction, which are fundamental attributes of living animal protoplasm. In the higher types of Metazoa these primary activities are performed by complex organ systems, nutrition for example, involving not only the digestive system but the muscular, nervous, circulatory and respiratory systems as well. Each organ has its particular part to play in the economy of the whole and each cell is differentiated for the purpose of its specialized function. T issue cells, therefore, are physiologic ally unbalanced cells since they are preeminently specialized for secretion, or contraction, or irritability, etc. Division of labor in a physiological sense here reaches its highest expression. In the lower Metazoa the organ systems are less highly special ized; fewer organs are present to perform the same fundamental Vital activities and the tissue cells have relatively more kinds of work to do for the organism as a whole. Thus the supporting and covering cells of a coelenterate combine the functions of respiration, irritability, muscular contraction, excretion and circulation with the primary functions of an epithelium. Each of them is more nearly balanced physiologically than a single cell of the higher types, but it still needs the activities of other cells, and the organism is again the sum-total of all its cellular parts. Excerpt from The Protozoa The Protozoa not only claim the interest of the professional naturalist, but also that of a wider circle of nature students who, with the aid of the microscope, have always found here a fascinating field for observation and research. In writing the present volume, embodying a summary of the more recent discoveries concerning these minute animals, I have aimed to keep in mind the needs of the latter class of naturalists, as well as those who search more deeply in the unicellular organisms for the solution of many morphological problems which remain unsolved in the higher animals, or for vital processes which afford a transition from the manifestations of life in its simplest expression to life as seen in the lower forms of invertebrates. The subject-matter of the volume is treated from three points of view: (1) The historical, to which the first chapter is devoted. (2) The comparative, to which five chapters are given: one to the group of Protozoa as a whole, the other four to the main classes. (3) The general, to which three chapters are devoted. One of these is given to the phenomena of old age or senile degeneration in Protozoa and renewal of youth through the union of two individuals, and to the bearing of these phenomena upon sexual reproduction in general. Another is given to the special structures of nuclei and centrosomes of the Protozoa; this, the most technical chapter in the book, is introduced because of the growing importance which the Protozoa have in the problems of cellular biology, especially with those dealing with the origin of the division-centre and its accompanying structures in the cells of the Metazoa. The last chapter is devoted to a consideration of the physiology of the Protozoa, with especial reference to the Protozoa as organisms endowed with the powers of coordination and of adaptation, which up to the present time have eluded physical and chemical analysis. Excerpt from Protozoa in Biological Research Numerous textbooks of varying degrees of excellence for the study of Protozoa are now on the market and should be consulted for a general treatment of these unicellular forms. This volume will not fill such a need, but has been prepared as a result of a discussion by a group of specialists assembled during the summer of 1937 at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, for the purpose of ascertaining the best means to stimulate further research on these unicellular animals. Excerpt from Protozoology, Vol. 1 of 2: A Manual for Medical Men, Veterinarians and Zoologists The subject of Protozoology has, in recent years, shown a tendency to become divided into two sections. In the one the student's attention is directed chiefly to the study of free-living Protozoa, in the other to parasitic forms, more especially those which give rise to disease in man and domestic animals. Such a division, if it becomes absolute, cannot lead to a clear understanding of the group as a whole, for it is evident that without some knowledge of free-living Protozoa, from which they have been undoubtedly evolved, a wrong conception of parasitic forms will be obtained. As in other branches of science, specialization appears to be inevitable if any advance is to be made, but however specialized a student becomes, it is his duty to keep himself informed of any progress made outside his particular field. Anyone who wishes to make an intel ligent study of parasitic Protozoa must be acquainted with the funda mental principles of general Protozoology, and, indeed, with those of general Zoology, Physiology, and even other sciences. This is merely another way of stating the well-recognized fact that all sciences are inter dependent. On this account the student of the Protozoa which are pathogenic to man and domestic animals should have a sound knowledge of other parasitic Protozoa, and at least a good working knowledge of non-parasitic forms as well. Conversely, those who study free-living Protozoa should have a clear conception of the parasitic forms, for the extensive investigations of recent years have contributed so much to our knowledge that in many respects they are better known than their free living relations, particularly as regards the completeness of their life histories and the probable course of their evolution. In this manual the writer has attempted to present the subject of Protozoology in such a light that it will be of use to the zoologist who wishes to obtain information regarding the general principles of the subject and detailed knowledge of parasitic forms, and to medical men and veterinarians who are chiefly concerned with those Protozoa with which they have professionally to deal.
