Book Description
This synthesis will be of interest to bridge designers, materials engineers, maintenance engineers, and others concerned with coating systems used to protect bridge steel from corrosion. Information is presented on the causes of steel corrosion and the types of surface preparation and coatings used to protect the steel. Steel bridges need some type of protective coating to keep them from corroding. This report of the Transportation Research Board explains the mechanisms of steel corrosion and how coatings protect the steel, discusses the need for and types of surface preparation, and describes twenty types of available coating systems under three general categories: inhibitive systems, zinc-rich (sacrificial) systems, and barrier systems.

Book Description
This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation (DOT) bridge maintenance engineers, coating specialists, chemists, and researchers. Manufacturers and suppliers of corrosion protection products and systems for exposed structural steel on existing bridges will also find it of interest. This synthesis describes current practice regarding maintenance and protection strategies for exposed structural steel on existing bridges. NCHRP Synthesis 251, Lead-Based Paint Removal for Steel Highway Bridges ( 1997), provides a complementary and more in-depth treatment of maintenance issues involving lead-based paint removal. This report of the Transportation Research Board defines the maintenance management systems and decision making criteria used by transportation agencies for maintaining exposed bridge steel. Material selection criteria, surface preparation and application practices, quality control and quality assurance programs, and funding mechanisms are discussed in detail. The impact of recent and proposed environmental and worker protection regulations on current practice is reported. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying state transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search. Responses to the survey, Appendix C to this document, are published on the Internet as NCHRP Web Document 11.

Book Description
A current state-of-the-art survey is presented with regard to painting of highway structural steel. A thorough literature review was conducted and an inspection and evaluation made of more than 4,000 paint exposure tests. Paint film thickness measurement studies were made. Specific recommendations are given for selecting typical paint systems on the basis of six environmental zones, which represent the range of severity of environment in which highway steel structures are located in the United States. Model specifications are suggested for surface preparation, application, material procurement, and paint system.

Book Description
Smart Protective Coatings for Corrosion Control Overview of the latest research in advanced coatings for anticorrosion and the development of optimized surfaces with high anticorrosion ability Smart Protective Coatings for Corrosion Control introduces the newest research developments in self-healing coatings, self-reporting coatings, and superhydrophobic coatings, reviewing corrosion processes and strategies, smart coatings for corrosion protection, techniques for synthesizing and applying smart coatings, different kinds of self-healing and self-reporting coatings activated by different environmental stimuli, and current and future trends of protective coatings for automotive, aerospace, marine, nuclear, oil/gas, and military applications. This book also discusses new ideas in the field, such as the combination of self-healing and self-reporting properties, new techniques to study localized microscale electrochemical corrosion behavior, as well as atmospheric corrosion monitor technique to study the real-time protection behavior of coatings in different environments. The processes of coating degradation and metal corrosion are discussed in detail so that non-experts can gain a basic understanding of the corrosion protection techniques. Written by two highly qualified academics with significant research experience in the field, Smart Protective Coatings for Corrosion Control includes information on: Coating preparation, filler preparation, surface characterization, macroscopic and microscopic electrochemical properties, and self-healing performance of self-healing coating systems under different environmental stimuli Photothermal conversion species such as graphene oxide, titanium nitride, and Fe3O4 Different types of corrosion indicators, such as phenolphthalein, sulfosalicylic acid-modified carbon dots, and phenanthroline High-mobility polymer networks that endow a shape memory effect and allow coatings to recover their original shape and barrier properties Solutions to three corrosion conditions—room temperature immersion, alternating wet-dry, and outdoor atmospheric exposure conditions Presenting the latest research in the field, Smart Protective Coatings for Corrosion Control is a practical and highly valuable reference on the subject for scientists, researchers, and students in diverse programs of study.

Book Description
Hot-dip galvanization is a method for coating steel workpieces with a protective zinc film to enhance the corrosion resistance and to improve the mechanical material properties. Hot-dip galvanized steel is the material of choice underlying many modern buildings and constructions, such as train stations, bridges and metal domes. Based on the successful German version, this edition has been adapted to include international standards, regulations and best practices. The book systematically covers all steps in hot-dip galvanization: surface pre-treatment, process and systems technology, environmental issues, and quality management. As a result, the reader finds the fundamentals as well as the most important aspects of process technology and technical equipment, alongside contributions on workpiece requirements for optimal galvanization results and methods for applying additional protective coatings to the galvanized pieces. With over 200 illustrated examples, step-by-step instructions, presentations and reference tables, this is essential reading for apprentices and professionals alike.
