Book Description
"The objective of this project is to contribute to the effective design and regulation of propellers in Arctic service. The work will involve the use of special purpose propeller analysis programs developed by Martec Limited over the past seven years to determine the stress distribution and stress levels in propeller blades and the formulation of methods for predicting propeller/ice interaction forces. In this project a typical modern icebreaker propeller will be modelled with a nominal loading of uniformly distributed pressure over a depth of the blade immersed in a block of ice, and the stress distribution pattern and critical points where failure is likely to originate will be determined. Similar finite elements modelling will be carried out to assess sensitivity to a number of likely parametric variations, including: a) chord and thickness of the critical blade section (at constant t/c) and other features primarily affecting strength; b) primary performance dimensions (size, pitch, area ratios); c) secondary feature (skew, rake, hub dia, blade profile and section shape, pitch distribution). Stresses in the ice block due to penetration of the propeller blade will also be assessed by finite element modelling, and likely fracture patterns determined, considering the material properties of ice in both isotropic and non-isotropic forms and under a range of likely conditions of temperature and salinity. Likely configurations of blade/ice interaction load distribution and intensity will be assessed, and compared with conventional assumptions. ... (Au)"--ASTIS [online] database.
