In 1974, Lawrence Alloway wrote that in the era of Pop Art, “the mass media entered the work of art, and the whole environment was regarded, reciprocally, by the artists as art, too.” When Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Jasper Johns , and their contemporaries created art using the visual language of popular culture and mass communications, their audience usually understood their points of reference. Pop Art arose before the digital era; so many contemporary viewers see classic Pop Art from a different viewpoint, as historical art.
