Poincaré duality is central to the understanding of manifold topology. Dimension 3 is critical in various respects, being between the known territory of surfaces and the wilderness manifest in dimensions >= 4. The main thrust of 3-manifold topology for the past half century has been to show that aspherical closed 3-manifolds are determined by their fundamental groups. Relatively little attention has been given to the question of which groups arise. This book is the first comprehensive account of what is known about PD3-complexes, which model the homotopy types of closed 3-manifolds, and PD3-groups, which correspond to aspherical 3-manifolds. In the first half we show that every P2-irreducible PD3-complex is a connected sum of indecomposables, which are either aspherical or have virtually free fundamental group, and largely determine the latter class. The picture is much less complete in the aspherical case. We sketch several possible approaches for tackling the central question, whether every PD3-group is a 3-manifold group, and then explore properties of subgroups of PD3-groups, unifying many results of 3-manifold topology. We conclude with an appendix listing over 60 questions. Our general approach is to prove most assertions which are specifically about Poincaré duality in dimension 3, but otherwise to cite standard references for the major supporting results.

Ginot, H.-W. Henn and G. Powell. They are all introductory texts and can be used by PhD students and experts in the field. The European Congress of Mathematics, held every four years, has established itself as a major international mathematical event. Following those in Paris (1992), Budapest (1996), Barcelona (2000), and Stockholm (2004), the Fifth European Congress of Mathematics (5ECM) took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, July 14-18, 2008, with about 1000 participants from 68 different countries. Ten plenary and thirty-three invited lectures were delivered. Three science lectures outlined applications of mathematics in other sciences: climate change, quantum information theory, and population dynamics. As in the four preceding EMS congresses, ten EMS prizes were granted to very promising young mathematicians. In addition, the Felix Klein Prize was awarded, for the second time, for an application of mathematics to a concrete and difficult industrial problem. There were twenty-two minisymposia, spread over the whole mathematical area. Two round table meetings were organized: one on industrial mathematics and one on mathematics and developing countries. As part of the 44th Nederlands Mathematisch Congres, which was embedded in 5ECM, the so-called Brouwer lecture was presented. It is the Netherlands' most prestigious award in mathematics, organized every three years by the Royal Dutch Mathematical Society. Information about Brouwer was given in an invited historical lecture during the congress. These proceedings contain a selection of the contributions to the congress, providing a permanent record of the best of what mathematics offers today.
