If he has any powers of observation at all he has found that much that seems solid is mere shadow, and much that is subdued and seemingly humble and in the background, is after all the true basis of all the solidity that may belong to human affairs. The frown that Would once have daunted him has lost its terror, for he has learned its impotence and the smile that once would have spurred him on to vanity has lost its power, for he has found its emptiness, nay, even perhaps its falsity. So in presenting this volume to our readers in the autumn of life we do so, not longing for the praise of men, or craving for the blame of others. But just expecting it to be received at its true value, whatever that may be. If but one soul is convinced, that even in this doubting end of the century the real things are the things of faith, hope, and love, and God, our object is attained and our labour is not in vain. A book may be a better one for a simple man to read because a simple man has written it, and it is possible that the records of a man mixing with all classes, doing business in many towns, and sowing beside all waters, in his own blundering untrained way, may wake more sympathy and fellow feeling than would the cold superiority of a giant intellect and a university training. In his poetry Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844 89) sought to discover afresh the potentialities of language, and to that end developed his idiosyncratic theories of instress, inscape and sprung rhythm. Hopkins's verse is also informed by his religious beliefs; having converted to the Roman Catholic Church in 1866, he became a Jesuit priest eleven years later. However, his poetry is free from a sense of religious dogma, and instead offers a whole hearted involvement with all aspects of life, a love of nature and a search for a unifying sacramental view of creation.
