Many others are of French origin, such as Detroit, Michigan, which was established along the banks of the river they called le détroit du lac Érié, meaning the strait of Lake Erie. Many in the former New Netherland colony are of Dutch origin, such as Harlem, Brooklyn and Rhode Island. Many place names are taken from the languages of native peoples. Specific (personal or animal) names and general words or phrases are used, sometimes translated and sometimes not. However complicated the tracing back of the place names was, this encyclopedia lists thousands and thousands of place names in the United States of America and provides valuable information as to the origin and the history of the name. A fantastic reference work for everyone interested in American history.

Pages : 414
Book Description
Many names of Florida places evoke fantastic images: Caloosahatchee, Okeechobee, Loxahatchee, Everglades, Miami—to mention only a few. Did you know that Florida's places were often named to honor prominent local citizens such as postmasters, landowners, or war heroes? Jacksonville, for example, was named for Florida's first American governor, Andrew Jackson. Later the state's interest in attracting new residents produced names that suggested pleasant places to live, such as Belle Glade and Avon-by-the-Sea. From Alachua (from the Seminole for "jug") to Zolfo Springs (from the Italian for "sulphur"), Florida Place Names delights and educates with a rich and varied offering of Florida lore.

Warrington
Author: Mary Doyle Roth
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738562926
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
Warrington Township, located in Bucks County, was officially established in October 1734 and named after a town near Lancashire, England. As the years went on, main roads developed through town, some as part of William Penns highway plan, and the township was divided further into the four villages of Warrington, Neshaminy, Tradesville, and Eureka. Their borders were not well defined but were centered on important crossroads. Each of the villages had its own post office and school. The residents associated themselves with their villages, forming distinct communities. The year 2009 marks Warringtons 275th anniversary. To commemorate this event, the newly formed Warrington Historical Society has assembled the vintage photographs in Warrington as a glance back at the townships rich past, offering a window to a time when the Warrington landscape was made up of endless open space and agriculture was the main industry.
