Le cancer est aujourd'hui la première cause de mortalité en France. Malgré des progrès incessants aussi bien dans les traitements que dans les moyens de prévention et de dépistage, cette maladie véhicule encore beaucoup de crainte. La douleur est sans doute le symptôme le plus redouté et touche plus de la moitié des patients atteints de cancer altérant de près leur qualité de vie. Longtemps négligée, la lutte contre la douleur constitue désormais une priorité de santé publique. Tout comme le médecin, le pharmacien est impliqué dans la prévention et la prise en charge de la douleur, que celle-ci soit d’origine endogène (liée à l’évolution de la maladie) ou d’origine iatrogène (médicaments et gestes thérapeutiques). La complexité de la douleur, et en particulier dans le contexte du cancer, nécessite une évaluation rigoureuse par des échelles appropriées permettant une prise en charge personnalisée. L’apport de traitements de plus en plus efficaces et adaptés en fonction du type de douleur, notamment par l’encouragement à l’utilisation des opioïdes et le développement de nouvelles formes galéniques contribue fortement au soulagement efficace de la douleur. L’implication du pharmacien passe évidemment par la dispensation des médicaments antalgiques, le suivi des traitements et des effets indésirables mais il tient aussi un rôle important dans l’éducation thérapeutique du patient et la coordination avec les autres professionnels de santé est essentielle.Ainsi la profession de pharmacien d’officine actuellement en pleine évolution, tend vers cette démarche de prise en charge centrée sur le patient et permet de confirmer la place du pharmacien en tant qu’acteur de santé.
