Two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations have been studied using the BNL-E866 Forward Spectrometer in 11.6 A · GeV/c Au + Au collisions. The data were analyzed using three-dimensional correlation parameterizations to study transverse momentum-dependent source parameters. The freeze-out time and the duration of emission were derived from the source radii parameters.

In this article we summarize recent results on the study of Au+Au collisions at 10.8A GeV/c obtained at the AGS by the E877 Collaboration. New results on the directed sideward flow are presented. In particular, the dependence of proton and pion production on the direction of the reaction plane will be discussed. It is shown that the sideward flow is mainly due to nucleons and that pions show little flow effects. Two-pion correlation functions are studied to derive the density at freeze-out. Further, we inspect the correlations as a function of the pion direction relative to the reaction plane. A dependence of the deduced source sizes on the pair direction and momentum is observed. The measured source sizes are compared to results obtained in lighter systems. Measured m[sub t] spectra of pions and kaons are also presented. The pion spectra show an enhancement at low m[sub t] similar to that observed in Si+Pb and which was attributed to[triangle] resonance excitation. However, in contrast to Si+Pb now a clear difference between the[pi][sup+] and[pi][sup -] spectra is seen. The K[sup+] spectra, which showed a very steep component over a small p[sub t] range in the previously studied Si+Pb reaction exhibit for Au+Au an unexpected structure at very low p[sub t].

Data analysis is in progress for recent experiments performed by the NA44 collaboration with the first running of 160 A GeV 2°8Pb-induced reactions at the CERN SPS. Identified singles spectra were taken for pions, kaons, protons, deuterons, antiprotons and antideuterons. Two-pion interferometry measurements were made for semi-central-triggered 2°8Pb + Pb collisions. An updated multi-particle spectrometer allows high statistics data sets of identified particles to be collected near mid-rapidity. A second series of experiments will be performed in the fall of 1995 with more emphasis on identical kaon interferometry and on the measurement of rare particle spectra and correlations. Modest instrumentation upgrades by TAMU are designed to increase the trigger function for better impact parameter selection and improved collection efficiency of valid events. An effort to achieve the highest degree of projectile-target stopping is outlined and it is argued that an excitation function on the SPS is needed to better understand reaction mechanisms. Analysis of experimental results is in the final stages at LBL in the EOS collaboration for two-pion interferometry in the 1.2 A GeV Au + Au reaction, taken with full event characterization.

The RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) Program was proposed to look for the turn-off of signatures of the quark gluon plasma (QGP), search for a possible QCD critical point, and study the nature of the phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter. The first phase of the BES program (BES-I) took place from 2010-2016. Several interesting observables studied in BES-I, including the net-proton higher moments and the directed flow of protons, show interesting behavior below 20 GeV and could suggest a transition to a hadron dominated regime. Data from energies lower than 7 GeV could help determine whether these behaviors are indicative of phase transitions or criticality. The goal of the STAR Fixed-Target (FXT) Program is to extend the collision energy range in BES-II to lower energies than is feasible with colliding beams. In order for this program to be approved, it was necessary to demonstrate that STAR could successfully perform measurements in a fixed-target geometry. In this dissertation we present results from the fixed-target pilot run data set collected in 2015 with the STAR detector. The pilot run consisted of 4.5 GeV per nucleon center-of-mass energy Au + Au collisions. The [pi]− spectra and rapidity density are measured from the top 5% most central collisions and found to be comparable to previous results at similar energies from the AGS experiments. Additionally the 4[pi] yield is extracted and found to be 153 +/- 15 (stat) +/- 29 (sys). Together, these and additional results measured by other analyzers from multiple institutions in STAR, demonstrated that STAR can successfully reproduce many physics results from the AGS experiments. This helped convince the Brookhaven Program Advisory Committee (PAC) to include an official FXT program in BES-II, to be conducted in 2019-2021. Specifically, the PAC approved the collection of 100 million events each taken at eight different energies with STAR operating in the fixed-target configuration. This will extend BES-II to center-of-mass energies as low as 3.0 GeV per nucleon, nearly doubling the [mu][subscript B] reach of the BES program and thus broadening our search for interesting transition features in the phase diagram.

Data from the first physics run at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Au+Au collisions at (square root)s{sub NN} = 130 GeV, have been analyzed by the STAR Collaboration using three-pion correlations with charged pions to study whether pions are emitted independently at freezeout. We have made a high-statistics measurement of the three-pion correlation function and calculated the normalized three-particle correlator to obtain a quantitative measurement of the degree of chaoticity of the pion source. It is found that the degree of chaoticity seems to increase with increasing particle multiplicity.
