Book Description
In 1984 Desmond O’Connor and David Phillips published their comprehensive book „Time-correlated Single Photon Counting“. At that time time-correlated s- gle photon counting, or TCSPC, was used primarily to record fluorescence decay functions of dye solutions in cuvettes. From the beginning, TCSPC was an am- ingly sensitive and accurate technique with excellent time-resolution. However, acquisition times were relatively slow due to the low repetition rate of the light sources and the limited speed of the electronics of the 70s and early 80s. Moreover, TCSPC was intrinsically one-dimensional, i.e. limited to the recording of the wa- form of a periodic light signal. Even with these limitations, it was a wonderful te- nique. More than 20 years have elapsed, and electronics and laser techniques have made impressive progress. The number of transistors on a single chip has approximately doubled every 18 months, resulting in a more than 1,000-fold increase in compl- ity and speed. The repetition rate and power of pulsed light sources have increased by about the same factor.

Book Description
Microwave photonics continues to see rapid growth. The integration of optical fiber and wireless networks has become a commercial reality and is becoming increasingly pervasive. Such hybrid technology will lead to many innovative applications, including backhaul solutions for mobile networks and ultrabroadband wireless networks that can provide users with very high bandwidth services. Microwave Photonics, Second Edition systematically introduces important technologies and applications in this emerging field. It also reviews recent advances in micro- and millimeter-wavelength and terahertz-frequency systems. The book features contributions by leading international researchers, many of whom are pioneers in the field. They examine wave generation, measurement, detection, control, and propagation in detail, as well as the devices and components that enable ultrawide-band and ultrafast transmission, switching, and signal processing. These devices and components include optical-controlled microwave devices, optical transmitters, receivers, switching devices, detectors, and modulators. The book explores the theory, techniques, and technologies that are fueling applications such as radio-over-fiber, injection-locked semiconductor lasers, and terahertz photonics. Throughout, the contributors share insights on overcoming current limitations and on potential developments. What’s New in This Edition Two new chapters, on fiber Bragg gratings for microwave photonics applications and ultrawide-band sub-THz photonic wireless links Updates throughout, reflecting advances in the field New illustrations in each chapter Fully illustrated with more than 300 figures and tables, this book offers a detailed, wide-ranging overview of the current state and future directions of this burgeoning technology.

Book Description
This book explores alternative ways of accomplishing secure information transfer with incoherent multi-photon pulses in contrast to conventional Quantum Key Distribution techniques. Most of the techniques presented in this book do not need conventional encryption. Furthermore, the book presents a technique whereby any symmetric key can be securely transferred using the polarization channel of an optical fiber for conventional data encryption. The work presented in this book has largely been practically realized, albeit in a laboratory environment, to offer proof of concept rather than building a rugged instrument that can withstand the rigors of a commercial environment.

Book Description
In this book, expert authors describe advanced solar photon conversion approaches that promise highly efficient photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical cells with sophisticated architectures on the one hand, and plastic photovoltaic coatings that are inexpensive enough to be disposable on the other. Their leitmotifs include light-induced exciton generation, junction architectures that lead to efficient exciton dissociation, and charge collection by percolation through mesoscale phases. Photocatalysis is closely related to photoelectrochemistry, and the fundamentals of both disciplines are covered in this volume. Contents:Overview (M D Archer)Fundamentals in Photoelectrochemistry (R J D Miller & R Memming)Fundamentals and Applications of Quantum-Confined Structures (A J Nozik)Fundamentals and Applications in Electron-Transfer Reactions (M D Archer)Fundamentals in Metal-Oxide Heterogeneous Photocatalysis (N Serpone & A V Emeline)Inorganic Extended-Junction Devices (R Könenkamp)Organic Donor–Acceptor Heterojunction Solar Cells (J J Benson-Smith & J Nelson)Dye-Sensitised Mesoscopic Solar Cells (M Grätzel & J R Durrant)Semiconductor/Liquid Junction Photoelectrochemical Solar Cells (S Maldonado et al.)Photoelectrochemical Storage Cells (S Licht & G Hodes)Measuring Ultrafast Photoinduced Electron-Transfer Dynamics (X Ai & T Lian)Experimental Techniques in Photoelectrochemistry (L M Peter & H Tributsch) Readership: Chemists, physicists, materials scientists and hydrogen energy specialists. Key Features:Includes contributions from authors with international reputations (e.g. Arthur Nozik, Nathan Lewis, Michael Grȕtzel)Reviews:“This book provides an excellent overview of nano-structured and photochemical systems for solar photon energy conversion … a historic overview is given as well — to an extent difficult to find elsewhere … It provides access to the latest findings in these rapidly developing fields and is certainly suitable for PhD students, and researchers with backgrounds both in physics and chemistry.”Dr Christian Könrgstein European Patent Office
