Book Description
Excerpt from Philosophy of Education, 1920: A Survey of Fundamentals, Topics, Questions, References and Bibliographies for Group-Discussion A word about the bibliographies may not be out of place here. In compiling both the larger Bibliography at the end of the Syllabus, as well as the shorter lists of selected references preceding each sec tion, my intention has been to include not only those books which are, in a sense, standard and immediately germane to the subject, but also certain more general and less specifically educational readings, the significance of which consists not only in their contact with the sub ject at a given point but also in their value as introductions to closely allied and fundamentally important fields of thought. NO text-book is called for; instead, references to diverse points of view and conflicting evidence are assigned for each Topic, and the class - hour will be given over to a discussion intended to sift from the evidence in question that which is pertinent to the subject and the point of view involved. The student's recitation will consist in his active participation in this class discussion, and every student will be expected to contribute his share. I am glad to express my sincere obligation to Professor William Heard Kilpatrick of Teachers' College, Columbia University, to whom I owe much for both method and inspiration, and it has been my ef fort to approach, in some measure, both the clarity of his thought and the significance of his teaching. Book Description
The aim of this book is to present and analyze philosophical conceptions concerning mathematics and logic as formulated by Polish logicians, mathematicians and philosophers in the 1920s and 1930s. It was a remarkable period in the history of Polish science, in particular in the history of Polish logic and mathematics. Therefore, it is justified to ask whether and to what extent the development of logic and mathematics was accompanied by a philosophical reflection. We try to answer those questions by analyzing both works of Polish logicians and mathematicians who have a philosophical temperament as well as their research practice. Works and philosophical views of the following Polish scientists will be analyzed: Wacław Sierpiński, Zygmunt Janiszewski, Stefan Mazurkiewicz, Stefan Banach Hugo Steinhaus, Eustachy Żylińsk and Leon Chwistek, Jan Łukasiewicz, Zygmunt Zawirski, Stanisław Leśniewski, Tadeusz Kotarbiński, Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz, Alfred Tarski, Andrzej Mostowski and Henryk Mehlberg, Jan Sleszyński, Stanisław Zaremba and Witold Wilkosz. To indicate the background of scientists being active in the 1920s and 1930s we consider in Chapter 1 some predecessors, in particular: Jan Śniadecki, Józef Maria Hoene-Wroński, Samuel Dickstein and Edward Stamm.

Book Description
2011 Reprint of 1920 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This book is a classic text in the history of American Education. Dewey's classic work, although tedious at times, is a cogent and landmark exposition of progressive educational theory. Democracy for Dewey was both a means and an end to the building of a good and just society. In this regard he sought to develop strategies and methods for training students through learning and discipline to become socially responsible adults. In this book Dewey sought at once synthesize, criticize, and expand upon the democratic (or proto-democratic) educational philosophies of Rousseau and Plato. He saw Rousseau's philosophy as overemphasizing the individual and Plato's philosophy as overemphasizing the society in which the individual lived. For Dewey, this distinction was largely a false one. He viewed the mind and its formation as a communal process. Thus the individual is only a meaningful concept when regarded as an inextricable part of his or her society, and the society has no meaning apart from its realization in the lives of its individual members.
